Wailin Jenny's - "Arlington"

Takes me to one of the scariest but most adventurous times in my life when I sold my house, uprooted my life, and moved to California from the Midwest...without a job, without knowing anyone in Santa Barbara except for Rod - but with a big dream and tremendous hope. That move changed my life forever.

Roddy Doyle's Charlie Savage: 'Songs haul us back into our pasts in a way that nothing else really can'

Ah, just had a moment like that. Front row at a house concert. Song finishes and everybody in the front row—hell, probably everybody in the room to judge by the conversation at the break—is wiping their eyes.

It was this song if it matters.

Nice read. Love the Alice Cooper part.

Back when the kids were all home, we went to Rissers Beach every summer. How often depended mostly on the weather. But i made a point of playing the same CD every time we left. I wouldn't play it right away. I would wait until we were clear out of town, on the #10 HWY that cuts across the province. I wanted to create memories for us all. Especially for the kids.

Just not long ago my 2nd daughter was in a grocery store in Toronto when the "Rissers Beach" song came on. She was overcome with emotion.

The CD we listened to was Moody Blues "Sur La Mer". And the first track became the "Rissers Beach" song.

Very cool.{#Cheers}

I was in college and discovering Aretha and purchased "Aretha sings the blues"

I remember sitting in my apartment listening to this version of this song being completely blown away.

RIP Aretha

Sitting in my first evening Driver's Ed class, waiting for the instructor to come in—and this song was playing on the night custodian's radio out in the hallway. I felt so old and responsible (and excited), learning how to finally drive.

I don't know how you came to get the Betty Davis knees

Sly Fox - "Let's Go All The Way"

Track practice, junior year of high school (someone had a radio by the pole vault/long jump). Springtime. Warm weather. Gorgeous guys' bodies in track uniforms.

The Who - "Eminence Front" - gym class in my sophomore year of high school. For some reason, the usual custodian or whoever took down the cafeteria chairs from on top the tables before lunch wasn't there—so our girls' gym class was recruited to do it. There was a radio on playing this song, and we were all singing along to it while we took down chairs.

so anyway I was listening to Wilco and futzing around the house but when they hit those 4 or 5 notes in Impossible Germany (you know the ones) I'm instantly transported for about 3 seconds to Jackson in August when I saw them... crazy from the heat... and beer... and not eating ... nearly passing out ... and they hit that hook and I rallied and charged back down front where Kevin & Anna & Sean were and wow that's so cool that a few notes can do that so thoroughly. There are a few songs that do that for me. Sweet Jane, when the Steve Hunter intro is over and they finally hit the chunky riff and I'm back on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley and I can smell the falafel and patchouli and eww and I'm flipping thru the records at Rasputin's until they kick me out and I go get some Blondie's pizza and catch the late bus home....

All in about 1.5 seconds worth of music.

I'm  sure you all have stories like that. Yes?
