I have a memory of those days.  I was running the plaza on the Ohio Turnpike that was the first one out of Cleveland on the East Bound Side, Brady's Leap.  One Saturday morning during the campaign to get the RRHOF, a car pulls up for gas and munchies ... we had a Dunken Donuts and a PopEyes Chicken.  I met BB King when i was running the West Bound plaza on the other side a few years later, Portage Plaza.  He said that the main reason that they stopped there was because of Popeyes Chicken.  For you old timers, it had a Howard Johnson's cafeteria before this remodel.

Anyway out of the car pops then Cleveland mayor (later Ohio governor) George Voinovich (R) and then Congresswoman Mary Rose Oakar (D) whose seat was later taken over by Dennis Kucinich.  They were driving together (with one more person IIRC) in George's own unassuming blue 4 door something to NYC.  I greeted them and asked where they were going and Mayor Voinovich said they were driving to NYC to pitch the Rock Hall, on their own dime and time and car.  Think of something like that happening today ...Shows you what can happen when people get together.

What do ya think they talked about during that 10 hour ride to pass the miles ?  The back seat would've been pretty cool on that trip.

An interesting history about the station that ruled our 70's and pretty much the R&R world as well back then.  I'm only half way through it, but yeah, wow.  And some stories about Swingo's ...
.
An Oral History of WMMS, Cleveland's Legendary Radio Station

Ferenc: There was a concerted effort to bring the Rock Hall to Cleveland. WMMS led the drive because Cleveland sold more records per capita than any other city. We heard a poll was coming out in USA Today, and we got the phone number you could call. It was 50 cents for a call. We hit the ground running. Being No. 1, everyone copied us. The other radio TV stations and radio stations did the same thing. We pounded that sucker. They had to take Cleveland because we blew the phones up. The Rock Hall wouldn't be there if it weren't for WMMS. I'm not alone in saying that. [CEO] Greg Harris at the Rock Hall will even tell you that.

CHARDON, Ohio - A gunman opened fire inside a high school cafeteria at the start of the school day Monday, wounding five students, one of whom later died, authorities said. A suspect — believed to be a student — was arrested a short distance away.

The suspect was taken into custody near his car about half a mile from the suburban Cleveland school, said FBI agent Vicki Anderson. The Geauga County Sheriff's Office said that the suspect turned himself in after being chased out of the school by a teacher, CBS News reports.

At a news conference announcing the victim's death, Chardon Police Chief Timothy McKenna said the suspect hasn't been charged and his name isn't being released because he is a juvenile.

FBI agent Scott Wilson would not comment on a possible motive for the attack.

The handgun allegedly used in the attack has been recovered and is now in the custody of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, where authorities are running a background trace on the weapon to determine its origin and ownership, reports Bob Orr.

There is no word yet on the number of shots fired or the caliber of the bullet.

The sheriff's office identified the victims as four male students and one female student. Earlier, CBS affiliate WOIO-TV in Cleveland reported on air that a 17-year-old boy was listed in serious condition and an 18-year-old woman was in stable condition at the Cleveland Clinic's Hillcrest Hospital in suburban Cleveland.

Students screamed and ran in panic through the halls when gunfire broke out around 7:30 a.m. at the 1,100-student Chardon High School.

Freshman Danny Komertz, 15, said it appeared the gunman was targeting a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table. The shooter was known as an outcast who had apparently been bullied, Komertz said.

Komertz was just about to leave for his first-period health class when he heard a loud popping sound and then saw the gunman open fire, he said. The student who was killed was trying to get under a table to protect himself and shield his face, Komertz said. At least 100 students were in the cafeteria at the time.

Heather Ziska, 17, said she was in the cafeteria when she and other students heard popping noises in the hall. She said she saw a boy she recognized as a fellow student come into the cafeteria and start shooting.

She said she and several others immediately ran outside, while other friends ran into a middle school and others locked themselves in a teachers' lounge.

"Everybody just started running," said 17-year-old Megan Hennessy, who was in class when she heard loud noises. "Everyone was running and screaming down the hallway."

Television news footage showed anxious parents escorting children away from a school building, and ambulances could be seen outside.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland's MetroHealth System said a medical helicopter was dispatched to the high school. The sheriff's office said that two students were taken to Hillcrest Hospital and an additional three students were taken to Cleveland's MetroHealth Medical Center, CBS News reports.

Students at the high school and a middle school had already started their day when the shooting happened, but bus runs for elementary school children were stopped. All classes in the district were canceled.

Parents of high school students were told to go to an elementary school to pick up their children.

Chardon, a city of about 5,100 people, is about 30 miles east of Cleveland.

The best terradio Cleveburg has had in the last 20 years is ending.

V 107.3 has been sold and it changes formats this weekend.  It was a glorius 2 year run.

WMMS reincarnated with much of the same music found here.  I has a real sad.

At least the staff knows and has the week to play out their shifts and say goodbye properly.

I wasn't aware of the sale until Ravenna Miceli made mention of it this morning.  The music has been really good since late last week and this explains it.  Its been total freeform AOR and live music, Cleveland style.  One of the deepest libraries in existance.

So if any of you refugees want to listen to the last few days and hear some real neat treats,

 CLICKY HERE.

A year after the documentary Beyond the Lighted Stage made them more popular and beloved than ever, how do Rush choose to celebrate? How else but a concert album subtitled Live in Cleveland? Sampling the Canadian trio's career – from the prog ("La Villa Strangiato") to the pop ("The Spirit of Radio") and back to the prog ("2112 Overture/The Temples of Syrinx") – it complements their simultaneously released live remake of Moving Pictures, their biggest LP. It's no slight to Geddy Lee's vocal steez that the highlight of both packages is "YYZ," Rush's instrumental tribute to their hometown of Toronto – perhaps the only city that could have spawned this most quintessentially Canadian of bands.

Madness in Miniature

Mr. Gnome

Madness in Miniature

By Andrew Flanagan
November 22, 2011

This Cleveland band – singer-guitarist Nicole Barille and drummer-pianist Sam Meister – is at once Rust Belt scrappy and dreamily explosive, like they can't decide if they want to represent their hometown or blow it up. Mr. Gnome's third album evokes the dada bounce of local heroes Pere Ubu, as well as the giddily overheated primitivism of that other Midwestern boy-girl team; they may amble into a toy-piano interlude or let loose an anxious caterwaul over a Sabbath-worthy brick wall of a riff. On "Watch the City Sail Away," Barille sings, "The sky explodes/With a smile," in a voice somewhere between Billie Holiday and Björk – and you get the sense that these two are pretty psyched to see what comes next.

There actually is a street named Amrap in Parma.  I guess they ran out of names.

Back in the 70's I got to do a skit with the Ghoul on his show when I drove a coffee truck and had Channel 61 as a lunch stop.  We did a Thanksgiving goof where he was fixing a pink flamingo dinner and he ran out of cheese whiz.  I backed the truck up and crashed the back drop and ran over to save the day with a new can of cheeze whiz.or something like that.  It was over 35 years ago so the details are rather fuzzy.
