Kudos x 1000 to my local Oregon post office - three times they got a package across the country (okay one was Austin, but it's FAR) within 2 days' time. At Christmas.

I'm thinking it had everything to do with my side of things, too - because incoming packages have not been so successful. Now I have no gift to take to my hosts tomorrow—because it couldn't even get here in 4.5 days from Ohio.

FedEx is slightly better. They'll bring it to my door when they can find my address. I've had to chase them down a couple of times. They keep trying to leave my stuff with a neighbor. UPS has never failed me.

That jibes with my experiences.

I've told merchants that they have to ship my order by UPS or it's no sale.  Most of them comply.

pretty sure we'd get shot if we tried to ship meat into the USA. Can see the incentive for into and out of Alaska shipping though.

well it's the fastest way to get a package from Alaska to the lower 48, but I guess that's a special circumstance. Actually, it's the ONLY way to get something from here to the east coast in 24 hours. We shipped some fish via FedEx to family in TN, no complaints. Other than the price!

Yeah, I can't speak for Alaska, having never been there and all.  But here in the Midwest, UPS kicks ass and FedEx sucks for home delivery.  I think FedEx is thinking big and is neglecting its original business in favor of Big Business services.

Since the FedEx shipping hub is in Memphis, TN that would be the one place where I'd expect above par service.  My proximity to the UPS trucking hub may have something to do with the great service I get from them.

The FDA site isn't very specific other than they have no problem with homemade food sent to a private person. Commercial shipments and mailings of commercially-prepared food needs Prior Notice.

For some reason I think the things you're going to have trouble with are meats and fresh produce but the site doesn't mention them.

cool, I think we should be ok then. I will claim fruit cake like slabby says as I had to boot the golden syrup and marmalade to get within the weight limit for small packets.

FedEx has a separate food shipping service.  It has the same problem of lazy drivers leaving the package wherever is convenient for them.  This can mean that your shipment can remain in the hands of a neighbor for a long time.  I wouldn't trust FedEx for anything special.

sure you can send me some! ;-) We don't really have moose in the panhandle. At least not until you get up to Haines/Skagway. There's probably moose on the other side of the ice field from Juneau, but there's a, you know, ICEFIELD between here and there.
