is the fire used as a media server or media player?

and in a home couldn't you re-purpose an old box or just get an inexpensive nas?

Yes.

RP or other app for tunes to a bluetooth dongle on the Stereo, also has a fair amount of stuff on local storage. Makes a nice portable remote that can be moved around within bluetooth range.  Can also stream to the Roku over wifi/miracast for videos on the bigger screen. It generally lives in the Pilot house or Galley and has apps for recipes and grocery lists.
I have a NMEA200 to Wifi gateway so I can get real time radar and chart stuff on the tablet too. Mostly backup, but also good for guests, when someone wants to keep tabs while down below (with someone else at the helm), or for a second screen. I use it a lot for planning anchorages or checking out places along the way. Also gets used for route planning at cocktail hour on the flybridge a bunch.  It's amazing how much you can stuff into one little slab of glass and plastic.

An old box/NAS would be fine, but too much space for the boat and not really needed. There is an Intel  NUC that handles secondary nav duty to a pair of screens at each helm. That is on the boat network and has has a solid state USB attached that gets used for local backup duty.  I really need to rework my backups. I have one cloud and one local that get scheduled, and occasional (~monthly) manual backups that go to a different disk or two. But I'm not good about separating those, and unfortunately they often get carried in the backpack with the laptop...

Yeah, but the only windows I leave open on the Chromebook are music-related, so I don't get those. The workstation does, but I only use it when I'm working, so it's not such a bad thing.

I looked at that, but Fire tablets are always on sale, and can do double duty as chartplotters, nav planners, e-readers, game systems, portable TVs, recipe holders, and dozens of other things. As with Alton's kitchen, on the boat, the fire extinguisher is the only single task item allowed (Okay, not really, but as a rule... or maybe more of a guideline).

We used a fire extinguisher as a sort of mallet on Saturday. So if you need to knock some ice off your boat...

I'm thinkin' I need to build a Raspberry Pi and turn it into a media server.

Chromecast Audio

$35. You'd have to get one of the RCA to 3.5mm adapters shown below, but then you can use your phone or computer as a remote control to stream RP or whatever. They sound really nice, too.

The Rocketfish is a Bluetooth receiver. You connect it to your computer via Bluetooth and stream to it.

For RP and streaming radio stations, I use an old Chromebook, and an Audio-to-RCAs splitter. Dirt simple. Somebody posted a way to put Chrome on an old laptop to turn it into a speedy (if bulky) Chromebook. Next time I'm in the laptop boneyard I'm gonna grab one. Better still, buy my lovely bride a new laptop and rejigger her old one. It's developing BSoD disease, so it may be a good candidate for Chrome.

Please forgive me if this has been recently addressed.  Had done a search and was unable to find a simple answer.

I enjoy listening to RP's 320kbps feed at work on my office computer.  Wish to also play on my '70's vintage classic, component, hifi at home from my router's wifi signal.  I'm too old and stupid to be smart phone or computer savvy.  What is my most practical option?  Thanks in advance.
