TDN had such a great sound. They were mainstream but not at all wimpy. All three guys (the original members I'm guessing) could really sing.

Playboy After Dark! Oooh! I'm sure that the show back in the day was a bit risque—something the adults might watch after the kids were in bed—but the clip is quaint for these times. Amazing how young James Brown looks in his brief appearance.

It seems like I might have posted this before, but I can't find it so hey. The short conversation in Bug Reports about bands membership not being white dudes made me remember this:

A while back on the facebook, AliGator posted Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste of Honey. I always liked that song but never had the MTv to tell me anything about them; I always assumed they were like Chic: some guys masterminding things but with women out front. Which is fine, whatever gets the hits. But I watched the Taste of Honey video and was surprised to see that the women up front are singing, sure, but also lead guitar and bass. "TELL ME MORE!" I said, so I hit the google and found THIS TOTAL RABBIT HOLE of cool history (drop the needle on all the clips!), including the low-budget genesis of that Super-Soul 70s Synthesizer Orchestra Sound™ that became ubiquitous in TV action scenes.
Lots of cool trivia there. The Mizell brothers are producers I don't think I've heard of, but Larry Mizell, Jr. is a DJ at KEXP so that name jumped out at me. But the other thing I noticed was that, for example, the Donald Byrd track and others mentioned are on Blue Note.

Blue Note was recently bought by Don Was, which I know because of this great podcast where Rick Rubin spoke to him about ...everything. Very interesting talk between two greats.
So anyway, lots of fun, starting with DISCO!

Here's a video of them playing in 2004 so you can see them;
But this one is way better, especially the guitar shredding. Unfortunately, it seems like the camera that should have been responsible for shooting Hazel on guitar malfunctioned; anytime she takes a solo, they don't have the camera on her.
