Except that a songwriter/musician will likely have quite a number of songs in their catalogue, not just a first album's worth.  They might put their "strongest" songs in the first album, though "strongest" is a pretty subjective measure.

A long time ago, I read this about being a songwriter and musician-- "You have your entire life to write your first album, you have one year to write your second."

I never understood why this band was so popular but after hearing this brilliant song I get it.  I though the song and album Avalon was kind of numbing to be honest. Like most bands I guess you have to go back to the earliest stuff to really appreciate them.  Having worked in a record store I made the observation that most bands have one or two great albums in them and start to sound uninspired after that.   Not all but most. Thanks RP for opening up my musical  tastes!

I agree Jerry took Ferry's edge, but the direction he then pursued led to Avalon — one of my desert island selections.  That made it all worthwhile.

Check out the complete Roxy Music studio recordings collection available on amazon. I picked it up as a Christmas present and am pretty pleased with it thus far.  Price is very reasonable but there are no liner notes...read the reviews before purchase...
