Her conclusion is don't change your hair as a political statement which I can get behind. But just because your motivations aren't political (she is clear that hers aren't) that doesn't mean that there aren't consequences. Sandwiched between the other two blog posts I think the three provide an interesting discussion on beauty.

Maybe, occasionally, when Sinead or Britney shaves it all off, they're saying something, but no. It may be prudent, more accepted in places, more attractive to a certain audience, even, but flatly saying it's political? No. Or are we still saying short hair on women is butch, long hair on men is girly? I didn't read very carefully after the first third or so, so it may have improved.

edieraye wrote:That was the happy mix! I admit to still being partial to that CD. However the next year I made an "alone under the mistletoe" mix full of sad and depressing holiday music. That one has not been nearly as popular with friends & family. It would be if someone has just been through a divorce or breakup. Now I have the "We do! We do! We do!" song stuck in my head....

edieraye wrote: And Amanda Palmer seems like a good segue for onna-bugeisha, a wiki entry I discovered today. Can't believe I didn't already know this since 1) I did attend a women's college, where 2) I took Ancient History of Far East Asia to fulfill my social studies requirement, and 3) took the cliched class in feminism (although I don't remember the exact name). So I think this has probably come up before. But what with the whole getting old and needing bifocals and having a hard time remembering whether I've brushed my teeth yet today or not, it was not in my brain. And now I am glad that it is.

Have I raved recently about how Rumer's voice makes me SWOON? It does. So here is a free download of one of her songs. In case you haven't discovered this gem of a singer yet. (Best comparison I can think of is Karen Carpenter - and there isn't higher praise in my book*.) * Okay, maybe there is: Bette? Annie? Lizz? Still, you know what I mean.

But it did get me thinking about what I want to accomplish in the new year. So I'm posting it here in case you are needing a little nudge, like I was. Anyway, it is prolly US only (sorry) and seems to require iTunes. But if you can get past those two restrictions, looks like some interesting stuff. Crate & Barrel has updated their downloads - same book but NEW playlist & apps.
