*by which we mean "continue to be cooperative about lying quietly about the house" . . . .

He hasn't, but we were thinking Chester might be a candidate. I'll have Justine FB you for your take on the prognosis. Not that we have many options, but maybe we need to have them all lined out...

Okay so the vet returned my call even tho I specified in the message I left that it was NOT an emergency...
 
He watched Chester walking and using those legs... the right (dislocated) side is coming back in and he thinks in a week he'll be using it exclusively. The borken side, the left side, hasn't changed much from the xray you saw earlier. But early on he preferred to put weight on that borken side. Of course both were painful but he figures the left side was a constant pain but the right side would give him a sharp jab... but now that's getting back into place and once Chester's able to put weight on it without wincing, we'll go back in, knock him out again, do another xray to navigate by, and he'll put the bones back in pretty close proximity... close enough to knit back together, then tape that leg up so he can't use it. It's farm style but he doesn't see surgery being enough of a benefit to go that route. Surgery would get all the pieces back together and they'd knit a little quicker and straighter, but the pain and overall healing time, from what I understand, is about the same. Right now it hurts and he can't use it but he's in pretty good spirits considering... so for now we're just going to keep it up.
 
Thanks for your concern and help, everyone. If the no-surgery plan holds up, we'll get an accounting once it's all done and I think we'll be needing to literally pay it forward.

that was the dislocated side. the borkened side is a different story. no word on that yet.

Scott did well with the initial report from today's visit at the vet. I forgot my camera to take a picture of the x-ray, so I'll have to wait to post an update to the previous x-ray.

The vet is very happy with the progress. Chester is standing and walking a little on his own. His dislocated right hip is halfway back in place. He has some leg edema so he looks like he's wearing Tibetan leg warmers. He was very happy to see us when we came to get him. I thought maybe he'd swallowed a whistle, but it was just whinging.  I had to have some *ahem* up close and personal time while I cleaned him up. He'd pooped his kilt again. He seemed a little distressed, sniffing around while lying in the grass, only to realize it was he himself doing the stinkin'. He's sleeping now... 

Scott just stopped at the house on his way to the vet's office. He took the camera so maybe we'll get another x-ray photo.

Chester's back home, but the Dr. was thoroughly involved with some horses at the time Justine was over there, so she didn't get a full rundown... I'll stop over after work (the guy works very long days so I'm sure he'll be there). But they were very surprised and happy with his progress (ability to stand & walk etc.).
 
The dislocated right side is coming back in on its own, Doc says he'll just let that finish because I assume to push it back in would likely cause more damage, and since he's on some pain meds it should be okay. Certainly the dog is in pain but he's been a little more sparky the last day or so. He had been favoring his dislocated side more than the broken side, but last night I noticed him using the right side a little more, so that's the dislocation feeling better, I guess. He also really avoided laying on that side, but has been on that side as often as not the last day or so.
 
Dr. says there's some swelling in the legs and groin that is to be expected but is probably uncomfortable, we'll try to keep that massaged a bit and cooled down, I think the weather (cold and rainy with spells of warm sunshine) has probably been ideal since he can lay on the cool grass and that probably eases the pain and swelling.
 
Overall we're holding steady. I'll let you know the long (!) version once I get it tonight or tomorrow morning.
 
PS when I dropped him off this morning, I stood bs'ing with the vet for 10 minutes while he spayed a 7-toed cat. Just la-de-da *slice* So how's he been? *snip* Is he walking around at all? *stitch* ...
