The Newport Pop Festival 1968

It was on our home turf.  I had tickets and made it to the show only to pass out in the parking lot from an OD on some Romilar.  Stoopid 15 year old dummy.

The wife (my present one) found us and tried to get me and my buddy up to go in but we were too loaded to move.  We could hear it from where we lay on the ground, in the shade in between nods.  Turns out we were one of the few to be in the shade anywhere !

But it would have been nice to have been more alert.  One of the greatest concerts I ever went to and didn't see.

Of course I'd like to go back to, what was it?....'93 or so when I had tickets to see Screaming Trees but one of the bandmembers OD'd or some shit and they cancelled/rescheduled I didn't get to see the show.  I would have liked to have actually seen them.

But really, I'd like to go back and re-visit that Dylan show in '00.  I went to that one with my brother.

Every single one? Oh, no no. Besides you'd wear out your time machine and wind up getting stuck somewhere like Ft. Wayne, 1974.

But if you did go to them all, you'd be using your time machine so the one that happened second, would you get there with the memory of having already seen them once? And you'd be seeing them simultaneously and chronologically too. Would your cubicle-bound self right now be instantly slammed with memories of seeing all these shows? How would you sort them out? Would your memory of Dead shows sound like 14000 Jerries singing off-key at the same time? Would you still hate the sound of flip-flops in the office or would you be the worst offender?

I'd go back 2,000 years to a peaceful California tribe such as the Chumash and listen to a live concert around the campfire when the only music was live music. And when there was nothing in the sky but birds.

I missed out on that the night I got home from bootcamp. I wasn't sure what time I was getting home so told my buddies to give the ticket to a friend, who of course is dead now from a smack OD. Idiot. Loved him like a brother, but couldn't stand what he was doing to himself and he just laughed whenever I gave him shit about it. {#Frustrated}

I only got to the Grande four times, as I was only 16 and didn't think I could bluff my way into the age-restricted concerts. Not only that, I had no idea who Wolf was back then, nor would any of my buddies have been interested in seeing him. Taking a date there was out of the question, as the Grande was in a seedy part of Detroit and suburban parents were wary. Others shows I missed that I'm certain would have been more than memorable in that venue:
  • Jeff Beck
  • Fleetwood Mac (Thu) - Pink Floyd (Fri) - Who (Sat)
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Paul Butterfield Blues Band
  • Steve Miller Band (WAY early)
  • Blood, Sweat & Tears (w Al Kooper instead of that David Clayton Thomas interloper)
