n4ku wrote: I sure hope so, we've got a middle school closed here in Minnesota because of a possible case. I just read an interesting take on how the Swine Flu may have started, it seems there's a raging debate going on over at the Society for Environmental Journalists listserv.
"As of the moment, about two weeks into formal medical forensic investigation, no one knows just what the source of the mutant H1N1 virus first discovered in the Vera Cruz region of Mexico might have been. Much attention has been given to the case of five-year-old Edgar Hernandez, of the La Gloria hamlet in Perote, near the Granjas Carroll factory pig farm. Hernandez-who survived-is the earliest victim of the mutant H1N1 virus from whom a sample was preserved. La Gloria residents blamed Granjas Carroll for an outbreak of illness in February and March 2009. Officially attributed to biting flies, the illness produced flu-like symptoms. Granjas Carroll is half-owned by Smithfield, the world's largest factory pig producer, involved in pollution incidents at multiple sites on several continents. " pretty interesting article...here's the link if you want to read more about it

NY Times April 29, 2009 Calpers to Oppose Re-election of Bank of America BoardThe California Public Employees' Retirement System has announced that it will vote against the re-election of all 18 directors of Bank of America, including its chairman and chief executive, Kenneth D. Lewis, at the bank's annual meeting on Wednesday. The pension fund, known as Calpers, said it was voting against the bank's board because Mr. Lewis and other directors had failed to disclose the billions of dollars in losses at Merrill Lynch before Bank of America completed its acquisition of the securities firm on Jan. 1. The fund also argued that the bank's board should be ousted because of the undisclosed payment of billions of dollars in bonuses to Merrill Lynch executives in December before the takeover was completed. "The entire board failed in its duties to shareowners and should be removed," Rob Feckner, the president of the Calpers board, said in a statement. Calpers said that Bank of America directors allowed more than $3.6 billion in bonuses to be paid to Merrill Lynch executives and that the payment date was stepped up several months. It said that if the board was removed, a special election should be called to replace the directors. Calpers, the nation's largest pension fund, said it owned 22.7 million Bank of America shares, or roughly 0.3 percent of the outstanding common stock. Bank of America's annual shareholders meeting will be held at its headquarters in Charlotte, N.C. On Monday, Calstrs, the California State Teachers' Retirement System, said it was voting its 23 million shares against Mr. Lewis and the rest of the bank's directors. A preliminary survey of shareholders by the CtW Investment Group, which represents union pension funds and opposes Mr. Lewis, found that a significant percentage believe he should lose his board seat.

manbirdexperiment wrote:Arlen Specter to join the Wu-Tang Clan
This afternoon Arlen Specter (R-Pennsylvania) announced he is joining the Wu-Tang Clan, a prominent, loosely organized group of hardcore rappers that first formed in the early '90s.
At a press conference with all 9 original members, including the RZA, GZA (pronounced "Rizza" and "Jizza") and Method Man, a visibly disoriented Specter read from a prepared statement:
"My life had got no better, same damn 'Lo sweater. Times is rough and tough like leather," said the senior senator of his 29-year membership with the GOP. "I figured out I went the wrong route. So I got with a sick tight clique and went all out." This is disappointing. I really thought he was going to join the Insane Clown Posse.
