Reminds me of the Church Universal and Triumphant, a run-of-the-mill doomsday cult that bought a bunch of land (and still own/farms/inhabits it) just north of Yellowstone.  The leader (one Elizabeth Claire Prophet—right—a.k.a. "Guru Ma") would periodically declare that the world would end next Tuesday, unless everybody prayed REALLY hard.  (And probably tithed some more, somehow.)  Then, when Tuesday rolled around and the world failed to end, she'd claim (and the  cultists would, apparently, somehow, believe) that what that failure proved was not that Guru Ma was a fuckin' whacko but that she was right, and their prayer had averted the end.

Lizzy is gone now.  I don't know whether someone has filled her shoes as chief beneficiary/perpetrator of her fantasies.
