We had planned a trip up to our son and his family, but postponed it until they could get a temporary traffic control tower set up at the airport. They had a smaller one this year, too.

My grandma Di Pasquo used to drag my sister and I up to Forest Lawn Cemetery with the guise of visiting my grandfather and uncle's graves. Once she got us up there, she'd find a fresh grave with flowers and vases on them, nab a couple of vases and then put us to work picking olives. The cemetery was covered in olive trees. It was embarassing but those olives sure tasted good once she was done with em. Italians.....

Well, if you break them and fracture them and fault them over 40 or 50 million years at high strain rates (i.e., do it quickly) the rocks become punky. Have you ever noticed how landslide-prone the Olympics are? That's because the rocks are really beaten up. Compare that to rocks of the continental interior where there's little faulting (not near a plate boundary). The rocks are solid, strong and "ring" like a bell. So, earthquakes on the west-coast tend to be big, but, the energy gets absorbed quickly by the punky rock. Earthquakes on the east coast tend to be small but are felt long distances from the source. Henry's Olives are still going strong, although, they are done in fresh batches so we won't see any until fall. And for Janis, I don't usually link to wiki articles but this is a start: Cascadia subduction zone.
