It's really nice in La Quinta.

Well, not this time of year.

When we have earthquakes here, not much happens.
No old buildings and certainly not any high rises to come tumbling down.

My first one (in California) was the summer I moved there—-and I didn't even FEEL it. And then the day I finally THOUGHT I was feeling one, my coworkers told me it was a rocket launch at Vandenberg! {#Lol}
Funny how the three biggest quakes I've experienced were right here in Dayton, Ohio! {#Eek}

For those of you who are interested in the science behind earthquakes I thought I'd repost geoff morphini's great link to focal mechanisms.

Since I'm right, hHow is everyone on crystal mechanics?  The main difference is that granite cooled in a way that left regular even spaced crystals with an even structure.  Physicists would call it homogeneous and isotropic (ie essentially the same at any given spot, and in any given direction).  A regular crystal pattern like that will transmit vibrations very strongly without much attenuation (loss of signal strength/amplitude).  If the rocks in the East have a lot of cracks in then this breaks up the regular crystal arrangement meaning that vibrations have to cross a boundary.  This gives lots of points for energy to leak out, so over a distance you get attenuation.  In addition since they have been broken up and mashed together so many times the rocks might resemble a mix - concrete perhaps - instead of a solid rock.

When the rock is all broken up or in different bits.  The rocks in the east are good solid things so when they get shook about the vibrations go through nicely.  The rocks in the west are less solid so the vibrations get dissipated quicker.  I think that's right, but let one of the rock geeks give it the say so first.
A bit like hitting a lump of granite with a hammer as opposed to hitting a lump of sandstone.
