Ah, autumn! That time of year when —if you have already met your deductible— you take inventory of anything you can foresee that might become an issue in the next year, so you can get it taken care of before January. OR—if you have not met deductible— you make an X on the calendar, count the days until January 1 and ask yourself, "is it really so bad?"

My shoulder hurts like hell and the Xray shows some problems but whether it can be fixed thru surgery is unknown. So to go on, it needs an MRI, I guess. But there's no way to get the surgery scheduled before Dec. 31, and there's no way I'm putting the MRI on this year's billing and a surgery on next year's. So hey. Welcome to America.

Health Care Stories for America

Dear Mr. President, The main reason I decided to remain in Germany after serving and completing my enlistment in the USAF was the excellent health care system here. Sad and pitiful, isn't it...that I would CHOOSE to stay in a foreign country and obtain a German residency/working permit rather than return to my own country because of the lack of health care services and astronomical costs of medical insurance. I have a son who is diagnosed with hydrocephalus, CP, and has various physical and mental disabilities... so for me, this decision... (more)

My name is Sarah Gardner. I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was seven years old. My dad works for the government and I was covered by his Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance until I turned 23 and graduated from college. I tried to get individual coverage from Blue Cross Blue Shield without a lapse in my coverage. They denied fully covering me since I had a pre-existing condition. They would not even allow me the discounts that other insured parties enjoyed through the insurance agreements. When I went to the doctors I had to pay the full $150... (more)

I'm a Certified Medical Practice Administrator with a Master's in Health Administration from The Ohio State University. I've worked as a healthcare professional in the military, at two major universities, at a two free-standing Children's Hospitals, and currently work for a physician's medical practice. Oh, and my wife is a doctor. It is my professional opinion that among the myriad of issues that are affecting our ability to deliver easily accessible, high quality, low cost health services to everyone regardless of their ability to pay is...  My mother, a writer and single mother, died at 56, and my last memories of her are of her, on the phone, trying desperately to wrangle health coverage for herself. She was unable to, and her entire estate went to pay off medical bills. Twenty years later, my brother, who was suffering from depression, tried to check himself into a clinic because he was feeling suicidal. His insurance was insufficient, and he was turned away and given some medication. Two days later he killed himself. A year later
