The trouble was that it couldn't be trusted to stay on the sidewalk. It started to cross the road in front of me, changed it's tiny mind, then crossed behind me but in front of a car coming the other direction. I didn't hear any thud so I assume it was ok.
Sounds as if they're kinda squirrelish.
They are the deer of the Australia-world. Except they think they can outrun anything so if they see you they will try to run in front of your car instead of cutting behind

On my drive home from work today, through the farm lands of the Shenandoah Valley, I did a double take when I mistook a cow, at a distance, for a ‘roo. Not that I’ve ever seen a ‘roo before, but ...

A rather confused kangaroo hopping down the sidewalk just before dawn
Using the sidewalk seems perfectly reasonable. Here in Derplahoma, humans walk in the street with a perfectly good sidewalk six feet away.

Last night, actually, but the new Samberg movie âPalm Springs.â
Without giving anything away, it was really good. It might remind you of other movies, but itâs different and worth your time.
Ironically it wasn't shot in Palm Springs. I was looking forward to seeing some of my local stomping grounds in a movie. I guess I'll have to watch "Palm Springs Weekend" again. Unfortunately, most of those places in that movie are no longer around.
... There were also propane tankers on the train tracks right there, all together it was the scary kind of exciting.
so when did you climb back out of the water?
We are about a half mile back, and the tanks are on the other side of the fire. I'm sure we would have heard and felt it, but I think we were safe. My office/shop is about 100 yards to the left of that picture, I'm glad I was home. We were listening to the emergency radio chatter. It was pretty intense. They had to move the ladder trucks a couple of times because they got too hot. There is also a row of boats right there, I'm going over this morning to see who had damage - I'm sure there will be some melty fiberglass. I heard the hotel (grey structure in foreground) had some windows break from heat.

The authorities here wouldn't support the return bit. Luckily the only ferals I see are a few of the neighbours.
Once returned, they're not making more cats... what's their issue?
They still kill wildlife until they die
Well some of that wildlife needs to be controlled. Rats and mice?
I mostly stay out of this debate because my cat goes outside, but the ecologists claim that cats have a minimal effect on the rodents but a big effect on the native species. Australian native animals are poorly adapted to deal with predators.
I'm sure this is valid, but my immediate reaction is:
a) isn't everything in your land poisonous, bitey, spikey, staby or otherwise generally mean? How can hello kitty suddenly be the biggest threat.
2) You have a city named DARWIN!
iii) sorry.
Not everything is out to kill you. Sugar Gliders are pretty cute and don't usually go for the jugular.
