Yes, always rip flat, no EQ's or extra settings.  You can affect the tracks later and see how they work or don't work later.  Remastering music (thanks to Aram) has become my primary hobby now and there are some songs that come out great the first time, some that take many versions and mucho hours to get right, and some that never work.  If you ever uploaded the stuff I used to put up in the journals, you will know what I mean.  What I do now is way different from what I used to do.  I think I've gotten better at it.  I guess some of you will find out when its my turn to burn.  And how long a song, eek, I guess it depends on the groove you're working on.  Judge that on playback, you can't please everyone, just look at the song comments.  Go with your gut and heart, that's what this is about, at least to me.

I've clipped songs but had to permanently change them.  I kept a back up copy of the original, of course.

And yes, every single time I have to relearn how to do the entire thing because no one likes keeping their perfectly good software exactly as it is.  And no one seems to think that keeping buttons in the same spot version to version is a priority.  Not that I'm bitter.

I have a custom equalizer setting ('cause I like midtones).  It's not extreme at all, but it blew out something in a couple songs so that they sounded staticky — both in iTunes and on the CD.  I thought there was something wrong with my song, so I actually re-ripped from a cd... and it did the same thing.  That's when I looked at the equalizer.  When I set it to flat, the static went away.

I tried to use its start and end time function to clip silence at the starts and ends to tighten up segues and it worked great in playback but the ripped CD it's back to 0:00 for all songs.

I screwed up the sound on my test tape because I had tweaked the equalizer.

I figure I'll set the equalizer to flat.
