Yeah, I came late to the lard party but yeah. I guess eat less pie is the only alternative. We tend to go pie-crazy in the Fall when fruit is coming in to our house in laundry basketsful. Other times of year it's too precious to cook. So it works out. I probably had 5 slices of pie this year so why not go whole hog with the best? And there's not really any way to make healthy biscuits that I can think of. If you don't use a lot of fat of some sort, you'll make crackers, so again, more delicious/less often.

According to my food gods, Spectrum Organic Shortening is a good alternative for pie crusts. Made from palm oil (which is naturally solid at room temperature) and not hydrogenated.

Beef 'n Guinness stew, and biscuits. And here's a handy tip: When the biscuit recipe calls for shortening? They mean lard. Do it.

I just ate a huge salad and later I'm going to have some of T-Lo's awesome home-made chicken soup. It's different every time depending on what we have on hand, but it's ALWAYS delicious.
