Yes, that is one of the more bizarre cigarette ads I've seen; almost as if it was done as a one-off or a joke. In that era, even when they didn't use the "cowboy" figure, there was usually some sort of figure that they expected male consumers to aspire to be like: race car drivers, fishermen, scuba divers, guys at a baseball game, etc...but a clown?! It's not even a famous clown, but he does look happy, doesn't he? Maybe there was a good review in Variety for his show.

Seems like they would have met halfway and had it be a rodeo clown.
