I love being able to take my lunch breaks feeding the critters and eating real food for lunch (assuming I have time to cook it). I like being available for kids and aging parents. Above all I like being able to live where I want without regard for where the office is. And I play whatever music I want as loud as I want.

The downsides are there too tho. You are always at work. It's right there, that unfinished bit that bugs you all weekend and all evening. I miss the water cooler, the interaction with other people. It's one of the reasons I hang out here. There are some things that just have to happen face to face, so I'm away from home at least a week a month (and I can tell you anything you want to know about half a dozen airports. Go ahead and ask, I'm eager to share! I paid dearly for that information).

So it's a mixed bag. It takes discipline to stay on task, which as you can see from this post I don't always have, which leads to longer hours spent in my third office chair in 4 years to get the work done.

I could do 95%+ of my job at home.  It's an idea that has so far generated nothing but snickers at this place, tho.

Being unemployed, and a carer, I love to work from home. There's loads I could do - data entry, programming (embedded if they'd lend me the kit), proofreading, electronic assembly, model making, maintaining web sites, order taking etc etc. I worked from home when I worked for DEC, so it's no novelty. Suggest it to an employer (even pointing out quite a reduction in pay would be on the cards) - and enjoy the delights of having the phone put down on you. And these are companies that claim to be 'Investors In People' or 'Caring for the environment'. Seems they actually want me to be on the dole.....
