I suppose by next year, they will be passe and we we need a new bird to amuse us. My vote will be for the Australian Crow who's call sounds like it is the throws of orgasm.
The only advantage I see, is that Aussie nuke subs can a make a bigger contribution to intelligence gathering. But for some of China's more egregious acts of territorial aggression, is better intelligence really required?
it's dark down here? lots a sharks with no fins? the mind boggles
yes food more or less is the limiting factor i saw where they're probably going to lease a retiring los angeles class boat to get familiar before they get a virginia if i heard the talking heads correctly who knows with politics...
Could have just sold us a used one instead of decommissioning it, treaties be damned (photo of reactor compartments from decommissioned subs)
Simple: endless energy source. Along with that comes a host of advantages: A nuke sub can stay submerged for weeks if necessary. It does not need oxygen to burn fuel, or tens of thousands of gallons of fuel. I don't know, but I suspect it can be quieter than a combustion engine. Because the energy is practically free - within reason of course - they can maintain a relatively higher standard-of-living than conventional subs.
Sure it's a lot more expense up front, but the advantages far outweigh the investment. c.
True. A nuke sub can stay submerged for longer. Quieter sounds right.
Practically what does this mean? Australia is not about to fire at Chinese targets.

Much, much quieter. And in submarine warfare, quiet is everything.

The big question that is not being addressed: why go to the extra expense of a nuclear-powered submarine?
What exactly can a nuclear-powered submarine accomplish that is either impossible or more difficult for a conventional submarine?

The common practice in Australia is for the government (state or federal) to write a huge cancellation fee into the contract along with payments heavily weighted up front as a poison pill to keep the next government from changing things. Then the next government says, "Screw you" and cancels anyway. Win-win.
i listened to the economist radio/podcast earlier ("the intelligence" portion) i learned a bit about a more complete picture ask your smart speaker to play it because devilish details
