Putin will be laughing all the way to the bank(s of the Oder and beyond). The future of the EU is going to be hanging on a silk thread for the next few years. One can only hope as time passes and a new generation rises, one that is not scared of open borders and foreigners, the tide will turn back again. But right now, things are looking pretty grim for open societies in Europe.

My nightmare case scenario: The EU dissolves. Trump is elected. Putin walks into the vacuum on the back of misplaced nationalist sentiment and no one is going to stop him. At best, he will just reassert post 1989 borders. At worst, he'll just keep on marching.. or, knowing him, he'll let the local fascists do it for him so nobody realises they are actually getting invaded by a Russian reincarnation of Genghis Kahn.

These are all things that I thought were absolutely inconceivable just a week ago. Timothy G. Ash has a good take on it

Using the age groups for the Brexit vote as noted above, I located some age distribution data for the US population, and then did some rough calculations (variable being lack of accurate count data on 18 & 19 yo).

I would say a certain part of the exit vote was due to this, but how much? Maybe it's a fine line between xenophobia, and simply trying to protect one's own country/culture. To describe the entire exit vote as xenophobia (and i dont think you are) is a very narrow way of looking at it. There are a lot of good, solid reasons for exiting.

The vote in November is of course, yet to happen. You can easily measure the demographics and age of the voters after the vote, as I'm sure some will.

Me, I won't be shocked if it's a very similar outcome, re the age split.

It looks like the same sort of skew as that other posting. Folks under 50 wanted to remain, but will live within the decision that the older folks "made."

We see the same thing in my school district: there's a voting block from a 55+ community that is very active but very frugal. So we couldn't get more money for our schools like our surrounding districts have; the older voting block (understandably) didn't want any more of their pension taken by taxes. So their decision making affects all the children in our area.

Democracy, right? Can't live with it, can't...waitaminnit.

Hogwash. I havent seen much evidence that the older/retired population is behind Trump. To the contrary, you now have many Fox watching republicans retirees willing to vote for Hillary, as they cross themselves entering the voting booth. It's the middle age group that's behind Trump.

Saw an article that I can't find now contending that the exit was necessary because of how EU restrictions make them have poorer vacuums, and there's some problem with quality refrigerators. Not living over there, I couldn't tell if I'd found a very dry version of the Onion.

It was always a half assed effort anyway...Europe was never able to capitalize the so called peace dividend of the early 90s. Is the world becoming a larger place again?
