We must begin moving beyond militarism, as Martin Luther King urged more than 50 years ago

And as Eisenhower warned about.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

OK.  Guess I have not been to those rich western countries yet.  I did not know that people could not resign from the military in western countries.

Lazy8, I reckon the author implicitly covered the ability to resign from the military and being left alone by referring to the democratic socialism model.    Unless you know of  social democracies that prevent you from resigning from the military?   If you, please name them.

Or do you prefer see the world in polarized ideological terms?

No, not covered at all.

Once enough of your neighbors vote for chains you get chains. Whoopie, it was democratic, so shut up and wait in line for your rations.

The military (now that the draft is—at least for now—gone) is a bit of a tradeoff: you put up with rigid regimentation and the forfeiting of every imaginable freedom (up to and including your life) in exchange for a paternalistic system that takes care of you. At least as it defines "care". But you can opt out and resume a life you are in control of.

If an entire country is converted to this kind of regime your option to opt out is gone, at least without fleeing the country. Assuming they'll let you out.
