Good points. However, I doubt that with high incidents of sexual assault that drafting women into the military will succeed. In essence, its one thing to sentence young men to possible maiming and death, but to add rampant sexual abuse of women, would not be acceptable to most Americans. Forcing women into potential sexual abuse and in some cases, forcing them to give birth, in addition to facing combat, is a set of of cruelty beyond serving one's country.

Just imagine for a moment, how all of you would feel if we were suddenly bombed by Putin or XI and the government had no choice but to reinstate conscription. Our Troop levels demand a draft because we do not have the feet to fill the boots on the ground. All of You would HOWL to the moon and back. This forum would explode with emotion. We all knew Trump couldn't happen either. Matt Gaetz, Majorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, Gym Jordan, Paul Gosar, et al, will be more than happy to vote for the draft. After all, they're just gambling with ideology ... and someone else's lives.
Interesting. I used to argue for bringing back the draft as a way to get people to pay attention to what was going on in the world because theoretically they would have skin in the game. haven't made this argument for probably about 5 years or so.
And even more interesting is that only men were drafted. Talk about having no control over your own body based upon your sex ! The draft finally got somewhat leveled out with the implementation of the lottery based upon your DOB.
So we have a draft again. How many men are going to say you can't draft me because I am a woman ? How far would that have taken you in the original draft ? Not very ...
With our new woke world, we would have to draft all sexes, equally. Men women and all the new variables. One woman and one whatever for every one man. You still with me ?
Then we would have to make special accommodations for all of the variables and their special needs. How would this work in a system designed to break things by brute force using people to do it, against their will ? Once in the military, the government owns you and has complete control over your body, or that is how it used to be. There were problems with mandatory vaccinations going back to Nam. Refuse, you got thrown in the brig. And a dishonorable to go with it. Today, you get a general, IIRC and lose all benefits that you may have accrued to date with your service to that point. In fact, they are now going after the signing bonuses made to those who were discharged for refusing the Covid vaccination, even though the mandate for experimental drugs has since been lifted, somewhat.
So, we can worry about a lot of things, but a new draft ain't one of them. Unless you know someway to make it work in today's world. So when Putin or Xi come after us, we are screwed. Ain't no one going to show up to fight.

In my esoteric way I spoke to somewhat parallel thinking. It's sort of a coping mechanism I developed along the way to tragedy. It seems to cover some bases, even if unarticulated on its merit. @RBReich : Thanks to the filibuster, 41 Senate Republicans representing just 21% of the country are blocking abortion rights, clean energy, health care, and basic investments supported by the vast majority of Americans. This is not how democracy is supposed to work.

There are some Americans who are against abortion or whatever, and their strategies have included infiltrating positions of power to change/create/rescind laws allowing abortion that most people want.
This doesnât mean that society isnât free, or that itâs now âa bunchâ of fundamentalists (a vague term at best). It does mean that there are that sort of people - a minority - who did a dance around the complacent, and fooled the naive, and managed to pull some levers that they hope will force others into doing what they want.
That requires action. All the folks who feel differently need to recognize their numbers, protest and vote and say out loud what they believe in so the minority opinion doesnât control the nation. But your Chicken Little garment-rending about how itâs all falling apartâ¦well, it just means you need to go decaf.
