I'm seriously tired of the emboldened racists - I have a cousin who is in a mixed race marriage, they had issues before that I found sickening, the shit they have dealt with in the last three months is so appalling I'm having trouble finding language harsh enough to condemn it. I think we are at the point where people need to feel the consequences of their actions (yes, both sides) and then see if they want to continue. I'm through with saving people from themselves. I'm sorry if you are stuck in a place you don't agree with, but it's time for a change. I don't know what to do about the racists though. Those people need harsher punishment.

This is NOT from the Onion. The D.C. Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a sweeping anti-crime bill that includes a provision to pay would-be criminals and victims to stay out of trouble. The legislation’s pay-for-peace provision is based on a similar program in Richmond, California. Under the provision, the District would pay up to $9,000 a year to as many as 200 at-risk residents as long as they participate in behavioral therapy and remain crime-free. Participation in the program would be anonymous.

One of the biggest American dreams is to start your own business and "be your own boss". Obamacare will finally make that a dream much closer to reality for millions of Americans currently locked into their job's health insurance plan because of pre-existing conditions. Obamacare Could Lead To 33% More New Businesses Over The Next Few YearsRead more: http://www.businessinsider.com/how-obamacare-could-create-thousands-of-new-entrepreneurs-2013-5#ixzz2g7QmPdDZDespite objections by businesses to parts of the Affordable Care Act, there could be as many as 33% more new small businesses over the next few years as a result of the law, reports the WSJ. The Kauffman-RAND Institute for Entrepreneurship Public Policy calculated the estimate. Why the projected increase? A major barrier that keeps people, especially those with pre-existing conditions, from starting their own business is the ability to get robust and affordable health insurance. People seek out and keep corporate jobs, not because they want to, but because they feel like they have to. Entrepreneurs call the phenomenon "entrepreneurship lock." The Affordable Care Act could potentially solve that by offering people who start businesses coverage through state- or federally-run marketplaces for insurance (exchanges). To see that full 33% increase in new businesses, coverage from exchanges would have to be equivalent to that from corporate plans, which is unlikely in the short run. For young people, the idea of being unable to pay for massive medical bills seems distant and unlikely. But many older people have seen it in others or experienced it themselves, or have dependents that they have to worry about. Without a significant savings cushion, a luxury many people don't have, leaving a safe corporate job with benefits just doesn't seem like an option. Great business ideas aren't limited to the affluent or the young, and though it might take a while to play out, this looks like an unsung benefit of the new health care legislation.

I understand the problem is a complex one and it doesn't just require change on one end of the spectrum. I was voicing my opinion as one of experience falling from the once middle class to the new working class. There are a hell of a lot of us out there. I'm glad you are not one of them. It really SUCKED seeing all that I worked for slowly dwindle away. I did the "right things". I contributed my fair share of taxes and prepared for my retirement by contributing to a 401k and investing in the companies I have worked for. That's my bad. It's gone now. I am not crying over that anymore.
What I do see is that those on top are NOT paying their fair share of the taxes! Perhaps I was fooling myself all along and never middle class at all. I don't deny that I was duped into believing and swallowing the BS fed to me and my generation.
I just don't wanna fall further to the working poor. From everything I read and see, (when I am not asleep at the wheel and just doing what it takes to survive), is it's NOT getting better. There is NO recovery. Not at the moment anyway. That is a buzz phrase reserved for media hype and those that feed the masses. If there is one thing I have learned and felt first hand, it is that...........one's situation can always be worse. I've made the adjustment personally, financially and physicologically. I've had to, for my sake and that of my kids. I am a survivor.
I do feel for you, and I really do understand. I started my career at Bell Labs / Lucent Technologies. I wanted 30 years a gold watch and a pension. I got 5 years, 2 layoffs and a crystal water decanter that I sold on ebay for $10, plus the option to do it all over again as a contractor for half the money. We were fortunate that we had a saved a lot of money up. We relocated to Seattle in 2002 looking for greener pastures. But the economy sucked then too, unemployment was limited and we burned through every bit of our savings. We just barely made the turnaround before loosing the house. It has left an impression and despite the niceties we do enjoy, we save a lot and make sacrifices on what we consider non-essentials to protect ourselves. You're a survivor, so you'll get through it. It's not fun or easy. But if you get up every morning and be smart and try, you'll get a break. Continued effort and smart choices will lead to others and you'll rebuild. Keep hoping for better things for all though. Work within your community and peer groups. Encourage others to strive for a more egalitarian society and vote your ideals instead of your fears. Change on a larger scale takes more effort and more time, but just like on the personal scale it does happen, we just have to work at it.
