Indiana boy licks light pole, gets stuck

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) — In a scene straight out of the movie "A Christmas Story," a 10-year-old Indiana boy got his tongue stuck to a metal light pole.

Hammond police say the unidentified fourth-grader was able to tell them that a friend dared him to lick the pole Wednesday night. Temperatures in the Chicago suburb were around 10 degrees at the time.

By the time an ambulance arrived, the boy was able to yank his tongue off the frozen pole.

Police say ambulance personnel explained to the boy's mother how to care for his bleeding tongue.

The 1983 movie is set in a fictional city based on Hammond, the hometown of author Jean Shepherd.

I'm pretty sure that if I threw a bullet at someone, their chance of survivial is fairly high.

So much for that argument!

This was an open-and-shut case, but no one bothered to open it: Steve, whose shop it was that burned, works in Alaska. He got home a week later and no one had marked it as a crime scene. No one had noticed that the photo of the shop on fire: the sliding glass door was open. No one asked Steve about the contents of the shop or he would have told them of a number of large metal things that would not have burned—but that were not found in the ashes. Steve found them at the pawn shop, called the investigators himself. Steve spoke with the neighbor who said, "I think I know who did this." And the article states that the Nickles were "assisting" with the investigation.

Here's your "NO SHIT quote of the week":

“They’re saying it was arson,” Brown said. “What they’re really telling me is, it was a man-made fire.”

"Usually Powell police work with state investigators when the nature of fires is suspect, but Brown said they have worked with fire insurance investigators in the past who usually are former firefighters.

Brown said Iriss investigators know what they are doing.

“They’re experts in their field,” Brown said.  "
Gotta hurt the volunteers feelings!

Police respond to report of gunmen on Ky. campus

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - Officials at Western Kentucky University say they're investigating a report of men armed with guns on campus.

University spokesman Bob Skipper says at least one building on the university's south campus has been evacuated and police are searching the area. University lawyer Deborah Wilkins says there are no reports of injuries.

The university is about an hour north of Nashville. South campus is home to Bowling Green Community College, one of the university's six undergraduate colleges.

We just had a little tornado! I was unloading the truck when I felt 2 raindrops and then WHOOSh! went the wind. It was instantly dark ( I though smoke from the nearby wildfire) and stuff was blowing all over. A big branch came down from the neighbor's cottonwood tree and arced the power line. I heard the POP! and some neighbors saw the explosion. Firemen and ambulance came. All very exciting, especially since we don't get tornados here.

And, my bed is now full of dirt that blew in from the open window...

Cool! There's no place like home!
