This is actually a pet peeve of mine.  When the band loses such an integral person(s) responsible for the overall sound, they should change their name.  It is a different sonic entity.  So many examples AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, Lynyrd Skynyrd, list goes on and on.....

KUCO... believe it or not, we have a classical station in Derplahoma!

I'd visit the Sooner State if someone could guarantee that I'd get out alive.  And free of any involuntarily contracted bovine-origin STD.

Here's a link to WKSU, Kent State University, Ohio.

It's an NPR affiliate that plays classical music as it's mainstay.  You can easily see the playlists so that you can tell whether or not it is your cup o tea.

Been it's format since the 70's that I can remember so their library is very deep.

I just did a test run on all 3 and they should be perfect.  "Light" in this case is good.

Am currently playing her a CBC-radio classical musical stream.  Would prefer to play her the Radio-Canada stream (en français) but for some strange reason it plays on my PC workstation with Vivaldi, the web browser, but not on hers with Vivaldi, Fire Fox or Edge.  Vivaldi has a chrome engine.  Not sure why and am not keen on figuring it out.

This kind of brings up a whole area I've been pondering on the dumbing down of classical music. I'm as guilty as anyone of really only playing classical when I want background music or to fall asleep. about half of the tiny classical section in our only remaining store that sells cds is expressly aimed at that. So the louder and/or challenging classical isn't played much. Symphonies is some ways are the worst for background music because they tend to have a huge range in volume. You are better off playing metal and turning it down.

So yeah, finding the right classical for your tastes can be hard.

It is a winner!   My first test run and the station is playing classical music I do not know.  (Florence Price, Symphony No. 1 in E Minor)

Thanks kcar.

My pleasure.

"My first test run and the station is playing classical music I do not know."

A good test. My former Boston favorite, WCRB, would fail that test time and again. Despite being in an area that seriously supports classical music—some supermarkets play classical as you shop—WCRB has a very limited playlist. For a while, the station was all about Aaron Copland and "Appalachian Spring" every other day. My mom told me that it's moved on to Beethoven. She's heard his 5th Symphony twice in one day.

BTW—after posting about Idagio, I checked it out. They have a free high-quality streaming tier.

Perfect for everyone. If that doesn't make you happy...

Agreed.  I would just not personally listen to this all day long.

On second thought, if shopping malls and elevators piped in Strauss, I would be happier than a clam.

Have you guys tried  WCPE in North Carolina? My parents were rabid fans when they lived in NC. Listener-supported and run by a dedicated staff. Great station attuned to its listeners' tastes. (Ah, I see Proclivities has recommended it too.)

Also WQXR in NYC has a mighty reputation, although I think they may have cut back support recently for up-and-coming composers. It offers multiple streams.

If you're willing to pony up some money, this lifehacker piece from last June looks at Naxos Music Library, Primephonic and Idagio. It recommends the last service for its mobile apps, search features and ease of use.

They used to have a stand-alone player, but no more. Looking inside the page, there is a URL for the HD stream that works with VLC (and I imagine with most players)
