When I say "crazy local," I don't think you can appreciate what I mean until you see this. (this isn't the band, but one of the members and his granddad, who I think plays with them sometimes).
But definitely check out the MySpace page. This is a kick-ass AUTHENTIC old-time string band. This is the real deal, folks. And hey! They're like home. To me, anyhow.

The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers list of accomplishments is rather extensive and continues being added to. As mentioned the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, as well as The Country Music Hall of Fame, Carnegie, Brandywine, The Library of Congress, Smithsonian, American Folklife Festival, numerous conventions, radio appearances, CMT, Rolling Stone Magazine, and many other television, radio, magazine, internet, etc. interviews. One of the most memorable being a visit from none other than Sid Vicious "The Sex Pistols", Boy George, and Malcolm McClaren. This visit inspired the "Duck Rock" movement of punk and landed The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers a no.9 hit on the London pop charts. All you have to do is Google the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers and be prepared to read.

Hell ya! Those boys are good! They remind me of the pickers I used to see in Tidewater, VA. Man I miss that stuff! We used to try and clog to the music but what the hell did we know. We were from Berkeley!

We went three years ago, and I'd love to go again.  OCDHG is talking about going again, which would give Z the impetus to make the trip.  So, maybe.

I tried taking my oldest kid to the WOMAD festival in SF when he was almost a year old. The place was packed and I couldn't lay him down without stoned kids jumping over him as he lay under a blanket. It was a big production number to get there by public transport, and then stay there (freaking out) for about an hour, and then deciding to leave. Now, 12 years later, I wonder about maybe taking him to this. Although he's more into Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin than bluegrass, it might be a fun outing with dad...

I thought it was extraordinary that all of the costs for this are being covered by one 72 year old billionaire. Amazing.

Our friends in Alameda took their two small ones last year (age 5 and autistic and 3 and a little Doris Day) and had good things to say about the experience. I don't know if they went both days, but I think they enjoyed it. Just let your son witness Steve Earle and his son Justin. And, be sure and get to the Bad Livers for some heavy-metal tuba. Don't you think the Alison Krauss & Robert Plant pairing with keep him interested? You're right there, you can't lose on this deal...

I wonder if we are EVER going to get to one of these. I've been wondering what Iris DeMent is up to... I hadn't head much about here since she married Greg Brown.

Wow. There are more than a few on the list that tantalize me. Oh, baby.. the Bad Livers. Elvis Costello's project sound great. I've always wanted to see Emmylou. Would love to see Dave Alvin again ( the last time I saw him was at a great, small show in Santa Cruz) I'd certainly enjoy seeing Steve Earle and his boy, Justin. Oh, a couple of Jayhawks. My old friend T-Bone. Where's Sam Phillips? Odetta would be dreamy. Bill Krichen would be a hoot. Nick Lowe!~! And his ex-wife, Carlene Carter? Groovy, baby. MC Hammer? I think I may have to take a pass there.

Do they do multiple stages? As much of a good time as we had at the National Folk Festival, the running from stage to stage kicked me hard. We went to the Guinness Fledh many years back and the choosing of who to see on which stage was painful.

Cripes, who knew I was so into Bluegrass? Who wants to send me a plan ticket? I'll bring jam...
