black321 wrote:I thought this was an easy to read, comprehensive discussion of the current state of theoretical physics. Physicists want to find a single theory that describes the entire universe, but to do so they must solve some of the hardest problems in science The recent film The Theory of Everything tells the story of Stephen Hawking, who managed to become a world-famous physicist despite being confined to a wheelchair by a degenerative disease. It's mostly about his relationship with his ex-wife Jane, but it does find a bit of time to explain what Hawking has spent his career doing. He certainly didn't lack ambition. Hawking has been one of many physicists trying to come up with a "theory of everything", a single theory that will explain everything about our universe. He was following in the footsteps of Albert Einstein, who tried and failed to devise such a theory. Finding a theory of everything would be a staggering achievement, finally making sense of all the weird and wonderful things in our universe. For decades, confident physicists have said that one is just around the corner. So are we really on the verge of understanding everything? http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20150409-can-science-ever-explain-everything 42

Then at home, Mrs. Islander: "is that one of your geeky science 'in' jokes" Me: "No hon, just the laws of the universe" Mrs. Islander: "huh, it looks red to me" Good thing she loves me despite the nerdiness.

Yeah, that's a cool painting - it always seemed like it must have fun to do illustration work like that in those days, even though they probably didn't get paid very well. It reminds me of JFK Airport too, now that you mention it.

This is more of an economics question than a physics question. We have the technological capability. It's just not economically sensible to try and carry passengers with unwinged air travel vehicles when the winged ones work fine, thank you. When some billionaire like Richard Branson decides to mount some sort of East to West rocket travel service as a vanity project, you may get your chance.
Yes, I was avoiding the Economics thread though - and this thread hadn't been used in years. I guess Branson, or someone of that ilk, could have a US-to-Australia rocket service (or something like that) if he wanted.
