English is still first and on top.
Next is Arabic, and last at the bottom is Spanish. Outrageous! People should only be sick in English. I'm outraged that you're outraged at a 2-year-old post!

I think that may be pretty common. One problem is, practically the only civilians officers interact with on the job are, well, let's just say they're often not the fine upstanding citizens we aspire to be. Many of those people simply do not WANT to be helped, for whatever reasons. Officers are on the front lines of society's failings, and they are helpless to make systemic changes. They are the band-aids while the patient (us) has cancer.

rosedraws wrote:I heard a story on NPR about a person getting a traffic ticket (or maybe he was arrested?) because he did not follow a rule told to him by the police officer. The driver did not speak English. The court ruled that the driver was guilty only of not speaking English. Had he understood the rule, he would have followed it. So, it was found that the Police Department has to find a way to deliver rules in the language of the recipient. I think that is absurd. The cost and complication and wasted time in this? It's gotta be pretty damn irritating to the Police. I do not understand why English is not our official language, and that it should be required for citizenship and a drivers license. Why is it on the municipality to accommodate all the different languages that might come our way? Why is it not on the individual to learn a unified language of the country? I realize, that we have not claimed English as our unified language, but I can not understand why not. Locally, a grandmother was pulled out of her car and BEATEN by a county constable who was directing traffic at an elementary school. Witnesses say the constable shouted racial epithets and demanded the woman speak English. The officer reached for his gun when bystanders attempted to assist the woman, who at that point was lying on the ground with her breast exposed. A number of children witnessed the scene as well. To Serve And Protect. Right?

prickelpit96 wrote:No! But if you get caught by the police it is no valid excuse not to speak french! You have to stand the consequences in the country you travel to/live in, even if you don't know the language. There is a appropriate saying in German: Unwissenheit schützt vor Strafe nicht. (A lack of knowledge does not prevent punishment)
Here, it's "Ignorance is no excuse for the law."

One of my grandmas moved her from Poland in the early 1900s, and she lived in a neighborhood where everyone spoke Yiddish, and I don't think she really learned to communicate in English until she got a tv set.
When I lived in Detroit there was a large Arab population, and the school district (Southfield actually) had special kindergartens to teach the Arab kids English.
I think the problem is that, geographically, we have outgrown boundaries. People from all sorts of countries live everywhere. Maybe we should have no boundaries, would that solve the problem?
Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one

No, sensitive sensible would be to take a widespread language like English. I never would give up my German, but we are used to learn English and so do most of the people in the EU. //edit: Thanks
