I used to drive a truck full of O2 bottles plus other miscellaneous gases.  It was a fantastic job. We heard all kind of scary stories about what happens when you  knock the valve off one of the big tanks. Even if they don't catch fire, they can make a pick up truck bed round from the force of the propulsion - so we were told. Never had a single mishap. We used to deliver gases to the local hospitals and when they needed their bank of nitrous oxide tanks changed out, we would strap in the 20 or so return tanks, shut all doors, and open up all the valves then drive back to the plant to refill them. Not sure if we really felt anything but it was a really stupid stick - just like a dumbass 22 year old would do.

Thanks GB! I like the idea of the high-speed ferry and getting to Victoria before nightfall, which is a challenge given the ferry skeds.

I thought about floatplane too - what better way to arrive in style than a float plane?

The Victoria Clipper (http://www.clippervacations.com/)  is the fastest 'land' based way to get there, but will still take you ~ 3 hours, it's about $70 each way. Lots of fun, great scenery, but you might get delayed if they see whales (wouldn't that suck?).

If you are on a schedule, or just want something different, go with Kenmore Air http://www.kenmoreair.com/ . They leave from Lake Union, Lake Washington, Boeing field, or Seatac airport. It's just over an hour and just over $100 each way. The scenery is also great, the perspective different, and you might still see whales (but they won't stop).

Forget about driving / ferrying unless you are going to make a day of it.

Ferries are definitely a throwback to another time.  Ferries make you get out of the damned car and breathe in some marine air. The only place to ride a ferry is on the bow, teeth to the wind.

The best we can do here is White's Ferry, which is the only Potomac River crossing between the Capital Beltway and Harper's Ferry WV, a distance of about 70 miles.  It's a cable ferry named "The General Jubal Early" and it makes the crossing in about 8 minutes.   There is also the Scotland Ferry across the James River down around Jamestown.  All the big bodies of water — e.g., the Chesapeake Bay — have been bridged.

WADOT and BC have nice extensive ferry systems.

Has anyone here ever taken the high-speed ferry from Seattle to Victoria?  How about the Port Angeles-Victoria ferry?

Also, is it possible to drive from Bainbridge to Port Angeles in under 90 minutes?  Google maps says 1h 37m but I need to make it in about 1h 20m or less.

A friend took the "vomit comet" from Seattle to Vic once. She said it was an interesting ride. Spendy and a rough ride. Sounds like fun to me, though.

Bainbridge to here is about 90 minutes. Of course you'd turn west before heading up the Quimper, but PA is 40 miles west of here. And 101 can be jammed up for any number of reasons - it's just one lane in either direction. I say no way to making it in an hour twenty. Edit: Take into account that you'll have to cross the Hood Canal Bridge which has unscheduled openings for Navy vessels - and the backup can be as long as an hour.

The PA ferry is about a ninety-minute ride. Lovely views of the mountains.

The high-speed ferry is passenger only. If you need to bring a car, PA is the only way to go. Or you could drive up to Anacortes and take the ferry through the San Juans, to Sidney, BC. There's only one through-trip per day, departing Anacortes at 8:30 a.m.

Edit: Oh, and Meowie?

(BHD and I live 13 miles from each other, but it takes a couple hours and a ferry)

Bainbridge to P.A. in under 90 minutes.... I wouldn't count on that. {#No}
(esp if road construction or bridge work,etc)

the ferry to Victoria, high speed- zips by here every day...
convenient and fun.

P.A.- Victoria- longer cruise, but nice views too!

Victoria is awesome!
(friends of mine have a plane, 10 minute flight from here...){#Wink}

I have taken the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria.  It's been a few years.  Seems like it was at least 1.5 hours.
