"As a young man in the 1960s, he led armed fighters as part of the far-left Tupamaros movement, which was known for robbing banks, taking over towns and even exchanging gunfire with local police.

Mujica was arrested multiple times and spent nearly a decade in solitary confinement, in a prison where he endured torture.

A government crackdown on the left-wing fighters helped pave the way for a coup in 1973, followed by a brutal military dictatorship that perpetrated human rights abuses like forced disappearances. But in 1985, Uruguay began its transition to democracy, and Mujica and other rebel fighters were released under an amnesty law."

Her husband posted yesterday that she won't be writing anymore posts but was still reading them.

A cool Jill story. I saw her in this dinky road house in Northwest New Jersey once. During the warm up act some town officials came on stage and stopped the show. There was a propane leak in the neighborhood and they had to evacuate the club till they got it under control. So we all were herded out to a parking lot across the way. Jill was also with the crowd and had brought her guitar with her. She headed up a sing-a-long and came up with lyrics of a song about the Propane leak on the spot. Later when the show re-commenced she reprised this song as one of her encores.
Thanks for the music and memories Jill! RIP and say hi to your old pal Warren Zevon.
