I saw him in Vegas too; probably would have had a card signed if I'd known he would be there but I didn't have a card and wasn't going to buy one. I have a few from 1972, the one year that I bought a bunch of cards. When I walked by, there were people there chatting but I couldn't tell if they were buyers or handlers, but it was a few minutes before the event was supposed to begin and there were people in line to buy cards or photos for him to sign. The autograph alone was something like $75 and the photos/memorabilia was super high so I'm sure he was grossing over $300 per customer.
I agree with the lifetime ban; the bitter cruelty of inducting him now would cement his example for all time. Enshrine the numbers and accomplishments, deny him the personal glory. I'm just that petty.

It was not just plain wrong. No one can dispute Rose's statistical accomplishments as a player but institutions need standards. You say you don't like what he did as a manager (betting on games, i assume) but he eventually admitted doing it as a player as well. Let's not forget that he served time for tax evasion. And he admitted to having sex with a 16 year old (maybe not quite 16) while he was married with 2 children.
I know that many members of the HOF are not angels, but few are so publicly known as despicable as Rose. The HOF is totally justified to refuse to honor him.

He really pissed off Paul Giamatti's dad... and his attitude, not his acts, is what kept him out.
On the field, there is no doubt he's one of the all-time great players. For that.... I agree he should go in.

Pete Rose dead at 83.
