When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float upstream

Please don't wake me
No don't shake me
Leave me where I am
I'm only sleeping

Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find, there's no need

Please don't spoil my day
I'm miles away
And after all
I'm only sleeping

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time

Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling

Please don't spoil my day
I'm miles away
And after all
I'm only sleeping

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time

When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float upstream

Please don't wake me
No don't shake me
Leave me where I am
I'm only sleeping

A rare example of a cover thats as good as, if not better than the original.
My cats favorite song.
She has done a bloody good job with this I think.

I Agree!

YES!

Great voice!
Good thing she is from a famous family. She sounds sincere anyway. Would be trashed if she weren’t.
Great new video for this song on the Beatles website
It's been 20 years since your post. How did RP do? 😁
love your mixes only sorry I only just found out about you
Fantastic cover.  Terrific energy by the band and Rosanne!  Love it.

Check out TNK on the album 801 Live for an example of how it's done properly.
Wow, this is great. More of a comfortable flow than the original. I approve, FWIW.
I wonder why this version wasn't on the "I Am Sam" soundtrack...
I couldn't really judge the quality of this cover too well cause I was singing along so loud.
Terrific cover!
I love the guitar work on this. Oh, and is that Ringo on the drums?

I used to think she'd ridden her father's coattails - to be fair her name probably gave her opportunities others didn't get - but she has always been a talented, hard-working artist.
c.

Well done!

Not a bad cover. Somehow it has a Michael Penn feel...
Great covers run in the family, I guess.

Agreed. I actually prefer when a song is not being covered true to it's form. A great song can  stand up on it's own.
Well this die hard Beatle fanatic approves!

Master class in how to cover!

Not at all.

Agree with your examples, including the song.
she may have 'done' it, but didn't add any creativity of her own. imho

Nothing wrong with a well done straight up cover. Nothing great but certainly not horrible. Probably album filler, as were some of the Beatles songs. Relax, enjoy, it's only a rock song. It could have been Rebeca Black.
Like most of Rosanne's work: superb.
This is easily one of my favorite Beatles songs, but this version just doesn't cut it for me.
How about playing Sleeping by The Band?
I dig it.
She gave it a shot.

I disagree, while observing that there seems to be some kind of strange Chipmunks synchronicity in the comments for the songs being played today. What am I doing to create this Chipmunks reality for myself? What?? WHAT??

I echo your sentiments.

Load of Crap... a saccharine ripoff without the tape loops and edgy Lennon twist. Makes it sound like a McCartney solo effort.
Didn't like it. Had to pull up the original halfway through to feel clean again :)

If you insist on making a cover, at least make the song your own. Give us a REASON for covering the song! Do you have an alternate approach that reveals the song in an interesting new light? Roseanne Cash's cover is just a total ripoff of the Beatles version -- identical in every respect except for the quality. A waste of recording tape, this song needs to be thrown into the vast wasteland of mediocrity. Life too short for mediocre music. Get rid of it.
Yup - What he said....
my favorite Beatles song...when it is performed by the Beatles

Rosanne Cash?!
Alas, a rare Beatles cover that neither merely imitates it nor annihilates it. I like the backward guitar at the beginning and end to pay tribute to the backward guitar solo of the original, while the solo in this version is "straight-forward" (pardon the pun). Nice tribute overall. Not sure why I gave it such a harsh review before. Guess I was just tired of hearing Beatles tributes all over the radio waves at that time and didn't realize it was because of the "I Am Sam" soundtrack.

I'm sorry, only the Beatles can play the Beatles.
All this does is make me crave the original. One of my favorite John Lennon songs. I'm afraid John's cannot be improved on.

that wouldn't be eclectic
that wouldn't suck, either
Over 15 years ago when I lived in Nashville there were famous and not so famous musicians everywhere. For the most part I didn't care. But I always kept an eye out for Roseanne Cash. There's something special about her. I like her vocal presence; and I can't really put my finger on what else it is that makes her music so attractive to me. I thought I would like her as well but we never met. I gave up waiting and moved further south. Wouldn't mind hearing a bit more of her own work.

Here you go :) ...well taken
It gets half of the original...

Many modern artists have produced musically pointless covers simply because they don't have any decent original material - they cash in on the talent of others. But we shouldn't tar them all with the one brush. This one by Roseanne Cash is good, and some are classics. Them (early Van Morrison) produced at least two - check out 'It's All Over Now Baby Blue' and 'I Put A Spell On You'.
Exceptional cover of one of my favorite Lennon songs.

I love this song, plus I love her voice. It's like peanutbutter and chocolate -- two great tastes that taste great together. I normally agree that covers usually suck, but there are exceptions. This is a nice arrangement -- it's simple, but true to the original. I like the steel guitar and the country touches in the background. I'd like to hear this in a bar with a hot band and a cold brew. I gave it an 8.
Well said. Thanks.
This is an enjoyable version of the song that could well be called the precurser to "Watching The Wheels". Hearing this version freshens the song and will no doubt increase my appreciation when next hearing the original.
why not just play the original?
nice cover
Works for me
Fun cover! Gotta love Rosanne.
no thanks
Absolutely unnecessary!
Great to hear Rosanne here.
I like this, its a cover not a copy.
Keep up playing the originals! I'm for Dylan, myself.
I always found that Dylan's work sounded best when performed by The Byrds... ;)
Great song...nice to hear it done by someone who doesn\'t whine. I\'ve loved Rosanne since I first heard Interiors. Could we hear something off that CD?
Bah, already reviewed this bit. Never mind.

Exactly. The Beatles might be an easy mark for covers because the writing is SO good, and many of their songs are recognizable, yet not overplayed. I AM SAM was probably the straw that broke the camels back.
Why remake this.. it sounds almost exactly the same as the original. Point?
A likeable version of this song, though the original is so good it pales in comparison.
I bought Rosanne\'s first album when it came out in 1979. Her voice sounds just as powerful and sweet as it did back then.
I\'m so sick of this sudden and massive influx of cheesy Beatles remakes that have poured forth lately that I\'m about ready to pull my hair out. I have yet to hear one that improves on the original. A tall task, to be sure; and maybe that\'s why it\'s a task that should not be undertaken.
There just aren\'t too many real good songwriters around, but a whole lot of performing artists on the other hand! Before the Beatles, artists like Frank Sinatra and Elvis, never wrote their own songs. Singing and writing songs where two different things. Since then the need for original material has grown, because their are much more recording/performing artists. But the difference is that songs are mostly already recorded by the songwriters themselves.
unless they completely change the song (a la joe cocker) then i hate covers. why listen to someone else do it when you can listen to the original? (which, 99.99% of the time is better)
So mike are you saying that nobody should do Beethoven\'s 5th Symphony, since it\'s a classic, and they\'re not Beethoven? Or to put it in more contemporary terms, Aaron Copeland? I\'m fairly certain that recordings exist of him performing his music. I\'m not sure what Rosanne adds to the original, but I\'m all for covers. The beatles themselves covered Roll Over Beethoven, which by that time must have been a classic. Kevin
Love it! Stays pretty true to the original, which as of late is one of my favorite Beatles songs.

I agree, "classics" aren't sacred, as far as I'm concerned. I enjoy hearing other musician's interpretations of songs written by "the old masters". In many cases they aren't as good as the originals, but it's nice to hear fresh interpretations, and it exposes the younger audience to music they may not have heard before.
