I was so lucky to have heard J.A. before they became big. It was a rainy night in Boston; they were playing in a place at the bottom of the Hancock Tower. When they played You And Me and Parnell, Paul Katner brought a small tape recorder to play the guitar feedback part because the venue had no equipment. 
Invited by my friend Marty, I was playing hookey from Juniata College - stoned but never had enough back then. Such great memories to grow old on. I hope that music brings such joy to younger generations today.

How can I ever forget all of the times that this tune seared its way deep into the innermost recesses of my consciousness (and surely my unconscious mind, as well?)? This is undeniably pure musical genius, on every single level. Yet, it sounds like it was improvised in a tiny nightclub with a certain purple haze... Perhaps one of the most perfect songs EVER... IMMORTAL, and worthy of eternal worship!

Me too. In retrospect this is Garcia playing, but in this case the sound fits into the Airplane's sound so well that I never made the connection.

Early Jeff Air is as good as it gets. I did not know that the sparing lead guitar was Jerry Garcia until the song's introduction. Very interesting. Count me as one appreciative not only of the song itself (!) but the intriguing details. TY, RP.

Great song...  Renee Fleming did a cover of this and it held up nicely...


I read somewhere that this album outsold "Disraeli Gears" and "Sgt Peppers"  and was number one selling album that year. I went thru a few vinyl copies. Great tunes and a moment in time before the world changed.

I was a 15-year-old Canadian high school student in a dinky rural highschool in Ontario, and you're right!  There must have been a lot of negative ions in the earth's atmosphere those few years in the late '60's!  Something was definitely going on in the "astral plane".

I knew this was an iconic album of the sixties and I have a song or two from it, but in the past two days I have heard a couple of cuts from it I had never heard before (on RP, of course), and now am thinking I need to buy this. Beautiful guitar work like this needs to be in my life more.
