my best friend in the 6th grade gave me Paul McCartney's 1st solo album for my birthday and sadly didn't understand why I didn't want to switch out for Benefit after. Wasn't to do with Tull or the album, or others she offered (she had a lot of great albums). I simply didn't give away gifts - this was something a person who didn't have a lot of her own things couldn't explain to someone who had anything she wanted.

I often come to comment on how good a bass line is.

That would have been Stand Up, I believe. As I recall, I gave it away when I left home. In some hindsight, this band was quite good for a while. The era when this showed up was a time when the music coming out had a freshness that's not much in evidence today. Maybe an ole farts' perspective, but objectively the continued bursts of creativity in the the late 60s to early-mid 70s was unique. Anyway, by my standard of objectivity, subjectively viewed.

Yes.   Sober, tight, disciplined, high energy.  One of the best from the period where in hindsight many of the concerts were mediocre or just plain awful.  

I always knew when a concert sucked back then because I simply wanted to smoke more hashish or weed to smooth the concert's rough edges.

I was introduced to Aqualung when it came out in 71 - I was 11. I didn't start exploring the Tull catalogue until I was in college in 79 and this album became the soundtrack for that first year, with this song summing up my weekend voyages home.

Oh hell yes!  Trouble for me is....I never went back.  Not that I've lost any memories of those times.  It's just that when you're looking, and moving, forward on your adventure you never realize, until it's too late, that for the most part the doors you walk thru close and lock after you pass thru.  That's the price of movin' along...

Why does liking one band/style/era necessarily mean disliking another? My college radio experience spanned Tull, prog and punk, and it helped me to break free of the musical constraints I grew up with. I hope you get a similar opportunity. Because you're here I think there's a good chance.

Of course,these musicians from the Punk etc. movement despised the old Progressive "dinosaurs"-and often for good reasons.While I've come to see a lot of JT's music less charitably than i used to,this atavistic and mournful song holds up very well-much more so than anything off of the highly overrated "Aqualung." Unfortunately the pretty good but overrated "Locomotive Breath" is rated much more highly than this song;again demonstrating that many of the Radio Paradise listeners must be oblivious to what is truly great music.

Great old Tull song. Very glad to hear this pop up on RP once in a while. The haters should give the old JT stuff a chance before casting their condemnations. It's a little different but isn't what you want anyway?

Way back then, I bought this on the strength of "Teacher," and wasn't too disappointed—as I recall. At some point Reprise runs a contest either through Rolling Stone or local radio: first one to submit the total time of Benefit wins something. Easy, right? Here was the catch: on the original pressing of the album, there are no track times. I imagined then, and even now methinks, the suits at Reprise getting a chuckle out of very-stoned-and-very-confused-hippies trying to figure out the track times. I thought then—and I think now, "Fuck them."

You may have been mislead like countless others due to Jethro Tull winning a Grammy award in the 80's for best heavy metal/hard rock performance, beating out favourites Metallica. This of course led to widespread criticism of the Academy for being out of touch with the real world as JT obviously did not belong in either category.
