These guys put on a fantastic live show. It takes a lot to get my lazy butt up and dancing at a concert, but I attended an Orchestra Baobab concert at which EVERYONE was out of their seats, even the couple in their 70s next to me. This song is not indicative of their more lively stuff. Check out Bul Ma Min or much of their earlier Pirate's Choice CD.

I did check out your suggestions and I like. However, watch those comments about the 70 somethings. Some of us are still on the floor with GA.

Is that a conga? It is so clear and haunting.
Would love to see the lyrics in Wolof/English...

I don't have the ear for this...nor do I have the time or energy to try to develop it.  I'm sure it tickles some folks' brain stems but mine just sorta curls up in the corner and tries to hide under a blanket.  I think I'll go throw on a Charlie Parker vinyl and try to coax it back out.  Maybe a single malt will help...

I love this AND Charlie (bird) Parker! I also don't drink. ...To each, their own!

EXCELLENT!!! Great mix of genres! The more I hear it, the more I like it! Thank You RP!
Can't believe this is a 6.4! Listen to the beautiful mix of that guitar and sultry voices...how can you NOT be instantly transported to some sweaty, warm, sweet evening in a West African nation!?

Battling bovines ?

Can I drop this to -10?
Listened to these guys waaay back when, then they just disappeared.
Nice that they have been back a few years and hearing them here reminded me that Africa is the source, the origin of so much good stuff.
Including Mankind.

Thank you, Bill for reminding us how utterly fabulous Orchestra Baobab is.
Over one minute of silence after the song. I send Bill an email about it, but perhaps it is intended before the curse comes {#Taped-shut}
Just not my cup of tea.

Wow! Excellent!  We're in the middle of decorating the tree, and my 13-year old son commented on how he really like the tune, 'cuz it wasn't Xmas music.

I've only recently been converted to this band, and I highly rate them.
If you like this tune then get this CD as it's all good.
I'm off to get the two discs I've missed now...

Their newer album "Made in Dakar" is even better than this one, but RP does not have it yet. (AMG does not even list it, but it's about 2 years old now.)
I'll see if I can find the time to upload some tracks.

I saw them live in november 2007 and had a great evening. The lead guitarist in particular is excellent, although he seemed a bit shy on stage.

Hmmmm,I wouldn't have gotten satanic puppet out of that - sounded more like female cat caught in a fanbelt of a 1976 Ford F150

This is nice...it doesn't have that generic sound that some African artists seem to have.

To answer an old question from ProzacGirl, the echo instrument on the guitar solo is the Gibson's Echoplex. A quite old and basic electronic device. Very effective. Check this version on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE6aCm41aPU&feature=related
I bought this disk after hearing it on RP. The whole disk is excellent.
o'wow.. I want.. no, I -need.. this music. This is so cool.

Yeah, that's the ticket! I was in Botswana, with my wife, ... Morgan Fairchild. in the meantime, I muted this eclecticism and went and played me some Bob Seeger.

Sorry, but that joke is not really applicable any more.
You're right, it needs to be updated to say "American-born". All of the immigrants who slave to become citizens of our wonderful country also learn our language. Meanwhile, most of us who were born here sit smugly in our monolinguistic world. Pretty good tune.

The result of listening to songs in your own language and Anglo American music in general, all of your life, I suppose. That's very different here, where popmusic in Dutch or Dutch bands anyway, hardly got any airplay at times. But there have been some changes and it has been proven that national popmusic can be more popular than anything else, time and time again. Anyway, overal we're probably much more used to listening to music from abroad (in other languages). Not only Anglo-American but for instance German Schlagers and French chansons as well.

Yup, not uncommon in some African music (or a bit Marley too)... Not technical in that area to know, but sounds like some effect pedals perhaps or just production...

Great music!! :grouphug.gif:
Nice world music version of Melanie's "I Got A Brand New Pair Of Roller Skates." :?
See AMG for a good bio going back to the 70s...
There's a cool show on VH1 (I can't believe I just typed that) called "InsideOut" showing Dave Matthews and Trey Anastasio going over to Senegal to play with these guys. After Youssou N'Dour I guess they're one of the bigger music stars of Senegal over the years. I really liked what I heard from Orchestra Baobab (and this song is cool, too) and plan to find out more.
sort of post-reggae acoustic trance. i couldn't listen to it all day, but it's a nice quiet, easy groove amid the hubub and clamour. reminds me of "talking timbuktu", ali farka toure and ry cooder.
ugh
