How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you when we were getting high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you while we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky

Wake up the dawn and ask her why
A dreamer dreams she never dies
Wipe that tear away now from your eye
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you when we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky

Cos people believe that they're
Gonna get away for the summer
But you and I, we live and die
The world's still spinning round
We don't know why
Why, why, why, why

How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you when we were getting high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you while we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me

Why, why, why, why

We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high

The "next coming of the Beatles" thing was idiotic and I'm not huge fan of them but this song is strong for me.
this was a guilty pleasure for me back in the day, now its just a pleasure
Yes the gossip was bad and the music was overplayed back in the day, but I still love this album.
you keep playing this bitchin music and I'll never leave work...

Had tickets to the Atlanta show the day they broke up. At the time they were among my favorite newer bands, so I was (and still am) ticked that I didn't get to see them. I have, however, enjoyed a lot of the music that came from the split. Oh, and if I based my music opinion on the artist's personality, I would not have much to choose from.

Same.

Oasis were never my favourite, but I did have this album, and this song is just fine.

Derivative drivel by whining whingers.
There is a certain segment of the RP audience that hates any music that was commercially successful. Or maybe it's anger because they come here to hear what they can't hear on the radio. But I suspect it's just common snobbery to look down on music that is/was easily accessible.
Funny true story of how an Oasis cover band was snowed in for 3 days at a hotel gig.

MTV was hardly a force in 1995. It had long since become a reality show network. Your reference is terribly dated. Like your opinion.

You also seem blithely unaware that they were playing off of John Lennon comparing the Beatles to Jesus when they made that  quote.  A controversy from an earlier rock era that helped the Beatles grow their fan base in the same way that it helped Oasis at the time.  Duh.

The Kinks famously feuded to the point of fisticuffs; the Stones came damn close on a few occasions (Charlie slugged Mick once); the Fogertys hated each other so much they broke up the band.  Disagreements in rock bands are part of the process. Chuckles all around.

Also, they may be unpleasant characters to you and others (judging from this board) but, they are talented musicians whose careers are now in their 3rd decade.  Both have recent albums out with their current bands.  Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds album from last year was one of the best rock albums of the year.

I'm an ex-pat Mancunian and I dislike Oasis as much as the next guy but, praise given where praise is due , this is an exceptionally good song. There was also a good video to accompany it.
I also have to admit Noel Gallagher came up with on of the funniest quotes I've ever heard when he described his brother thus..." he's a very angry man, he's like a man with a fork in a world of soup".

Were (and probably still are ) these guys jerks?  Yep!  No argument.  But their songs are quite poorly rated here, more so than anywhere else.   Okay.   But it appears from the comments about them that the ratings have more to do with how people perceive them rather than being based upon their songs.  Fair enough.

However,  then why do some of the rockers-from-past, who were documented pedophiles of the 'groupies of the times,' getting a free pass on how their songs might be rated?  Bowie, Page, and _______ (there's plenty, fill it in).

Lennon didn't do anything without thinking it out.  It may have been poorly thought out, but not off-the-cuff.  The Beatles at the time were searching for ways to dirty up their squeaky clean image.  This certainly worked even if it snowballed out of proportion to their intent.

Lennon certainly did seem to have a strong opinion on the subject.  One that would lead me to believe that he thought a lot about it, given the full context of the quote:

"Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about that; I'm right and I'll be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first – rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me."

This original comment was not considered controversial by the English press at the time.  It was only when the comments made it to crazy christian America that they blew up into an overreaction that I'm sure surprised Lenon in it's intensity.  That said, losing the fandom of folks that would throw your records into a bonfire seems like a small loss.

They once said they were bigger than the Beatles but that was really tongue-in-cheek IMO.

I hated them when they were popular.  Now looking back, what a great band.  And the Gallaghers' melodrama just adds to the story.

Somebody should have kicked the Gallagher's sh*t in a long time ago. Think of how hilariously they would have sounded waffling and braying through false teeth.
Never liked this band. Gallagher sounds like he's trying to channel John Lennon.

I really don’t understand how Oasis ever became as popular as they did. No single track makes sense - they’re just words put together because they rhyme. How can you walk ‘slowly down the hall’ but are still ‘faster than a cannonball’? What’s a ‘champagne supernova’ and if it’s in the sky then how are you ‘under a landslide’. So cross.

I think they admitted the second album included songs that weren't good enough for the first, and the third had songs that weren't good enough for either of the first two - so the downhill bit kind of makes sense. And it took Liam working with other songwriters to have the success he's enjoyed in the last couple of years.
That said, I did love these first two albums. Soundtrack of a lot of people's lives in the mid-90s.

Wankers - yes.  Toffee nosed - well the usual meaning of that is snobbish, upperclass etc which they are clearly not.  A variation of the meaning is to be 'disdainful' of those perceived as belonging to a lower class or lower talent than themselves -  then maybe yes to that too.

I think the "some Brits" you refer to are probably mainly English. It's a habit that gets up the noses of us Scots as well (at least a lot of the ones where I grew up). But you get over it, same way as I'm sure most of the English get over the way we speak.

I think that comment apply to me as well William164. Oasis were super colossal in the UK in the mid 90s with their antics getting more press inches than the music. As a result I think I made a subconscious decision not to like them. Now from a distance of two decades I can stand back and appreciate that they were really rather good, in a limited sort of way. One of the things I like about being a radio paradise listener is that I get a second chance at music I initially dismissed for reasons of youth and stupidity.

Maybe nothing unique, but a very strong, solid song and album.
This album marked the point Alan White joined the band on drums, he is a talented drummer indeed  (As is his brother, Steve, who played with Paul Weller for ages).

Musically Oasis really benefited from having AW join, but he couldn't save them from third rate lyrically lame Beatles knock off numbers like this!
One of the best Oasis songs.
