Good morning little god
I see you've come for me again
With a noose between your teeth
You are not my friend
Pouring little cups of tea
Humming a little tune
You sit across from me
And fill my little room
Little god

Smoke is in the air
From your little cigarette
You tell me to throw the fight
Go and place your little bet
Shake, little god-
Shake your little fists
All the strippers think you're odd
But you leave the biggest tips
Little god

Where oh where did I leave myself today
On the bed, on the chair
Did I send myself away
On a sleepy afternoon
Will I be returning soon

Laugh your little laugh
Stomp your little feet
They sulk behind your back,
All the people that you meet
They say time is running out
And you don't know what to do
And I hear them talk about
Another place without you
Little god
Little god
Little god
Little god
Little god

"...another place to live but not with you" as she sings it seems like a more devastating line that what's shown in the lyrics here.

I can easily imagine this being a Doors’ song and she is covering it.

Somehow I don't think the person who came before gave the biggest tips, lol!

Quite the impressive talent in her own right - gone too soon.

Funny; but I was thinking about another warmongering fascist currently in residence...
This is a Little Godlike for sure.

I wonder if you say that because this song builds like "the end" in apocalypse now.
I know I feel like sacrificing a water buffalo by the end of this song.

I don't normally like Patty Griffin but this is really very good.
I love this song--and version--but every time I hear it, I hear that repeating tone in the second verse that reminds me of a UPS truck backing up.
I love it! It has such a haunting feel to it.

An absolutely incredible song...the wild guitar part in the middle, especially! It's weird, but true; in Nepal, for example, "gods" are chosen. They rule awhile, menstruate, and then are dismissed...

With Kim Jong Un nothing fits. For long.

You know it was recorded over twenty years ago, right? Not to mention, the off-keys and snarls fit the subject matter perfectly.

I'd like to hear some Jeff Buckley after this one.

Glad it's not just me. Yesterday I lost several hours' work over a random crash. Not a big assembly or anything either.

Several commenters refer to this version having less emotional punch (that is, anger) than the original version. I don't hear that. The sound is much clearer, but the vocals are the same. She is slightly flat in the same place, which surely does not indicate a re-recording. This mix may be different, but how would that affect the emotional impact? I think this version is an improvement.
That guitar break in the middle is gorgeous!
Cippolina all the way!
Hey Cowboy Junkies are you listening?

That would apply to the guy behind him to the right...and probably a few million other North Koreans too.
That guitar intro had me thinking of Jimmie Dale Gilmore's tune "Where You Going".   Come to think of it, I don't think I hear JDG on RP too often.  How 'bout it, Bill?
Time to take this happy little ditty out of rotation...........
LOVE Patty & you play perhaps a hand full but terribly tired of this song. Please take it out of the loop & replace it with any other one of hers. It would be much appreciated.

Wow, really?  I find her voice pure magic.  We are so apart on this I had to look at your ratings.  Curious thing is that while the actual ratings may differ, I like what you like, pretty much to a song.
Taste is a fascinating thing.
Have to agree that the earlier version had much more mood to it, but love this tune.  Patty sure is a Chameleon.  The industry always to put artists into a box, but the truth is that most artists want to constantly explore new sounds...and so they should.

It's one of those fem vocal-lyric-mood combination that lures me away from the work I have at hand… part of the risk/reward of listening to RP, it seems.
this is an RP favorite and for a long time I wondered why. the more I listened, the more I agreed, this is a great song. Patty brings more meaning to her lyrics by droning and grating her voice to paint a sureal picture of life. 8.27

What is she getting at? In the Dilbert world where I listen, it's the little gods, their agendas, their means to the ends.

It's resonating a bit more today with my good friend leaving our work group for new horizons after being run off by the local little god.

I think the story is she was disgusted with her publisher at the time. Remind me to be nice to her should I ever be in such a position. I think this guys ass went up in flames...

Wow - I really like this!
one of the best songs on the playlist!
I love this song but this version is too clean. The version with the bagpipes is much more raw. Pure emotion.
oh my goodness what is this nastiness?{#Grumpy}
Its a happy little ditty
PG! Patti always rocks the soul... I rock with u Patti, let us rock together

A little self-indulgent...
Seems as though she has had a bad experience with the music industry.

Very cool tune, great guitar work.

Nice and edgy, which is a welcome change from the usual female singer/songwriters that RP plays so much of.  I am done with soft lament songs by indie women who have been through bad breakups.  This is how you can rock a slow tune.

Very Cippolina-esque guitar work...sigh, I miss his playing.

Oh boy,,,a happy little tune.....

Yep, I feel the same way.  The original was much more grittier then this.  This version also seems a bit slower and not nearly as angry considering the subject matter.
Very, very nice song, nice guitar work!
Nice!
she does not sound like she has been around forever...she has.

"Little god"?  I kept hearing "little girl," which didn't make a whole lot of sense either ...
Gawd, I hope they remix / remaster Flaming Red!  If that recording had this kind of dynamics and tone and fidelity, then it would be a 10.
Rather boring
Same here, though this isn't bad. I think the original is a little more powerful.

This is the album, though the whole thing was remixed.  The original was tied up with a dispute with her original record company.

My goodness...I can actually stand this.  Clearly different production could improve this artist.
Why this remix? There was nothing wrong with the original.
Agree with the other comments, this is lacking the rawness of the original.  Not sure which I like better.

Yes -- raw, gritty, powerful...but I'm afraid not as much so as the original that RP has been playing.  This is still a good mix, but it's lost some of it's power.

I agree it's lost a little of the rawness that made the other version so impressive.

I am going to have to listen to the other version again, but I believe that was a different vocal track a couple of places.
