My two cents: I've done the wireless setup before and people are correct - it is flaky.
My setup now is a Milwaukee 'ghetto blaster' and smartphone, using the RP app (or AudioGalaxy to stream from the PC).
Portable, rechargeable and field adjustable.

commando style

very flexible, adaptive

i like it

but is it wearable?

Rehashing some info here.....

Wireless speakers aren't really wireless, since they require power to both speakers. Plus they typically don't sound all that good. For best results run a speaker wire.

If you want stealth you can go with a frogs or rocks. If you want stealthier and don't require separation with your stereo go with one rock or frog that plays both channels.

If stealth isn't an issue you have lots of options, especially if you intend to place your speakers where they are protected by the weather. In a soffit. Under a covered porch. Often these applications don't require an outdoor speaker as long as you aren't installing a speaker with a paper cone. I've had a pair of indoor speakers by Episode on my front porch for years that show no ill effects.

Beyond that I have no recommendations about specific brands. If you can audition the speakers first, buy what sounds good. I suppose I can recommend Episode if you are having an installer do the work and they can get Episode. They are not sold through retail outlets and spend no money on advertising, but are instead sold only through specialty installers. They represent a good value imo. My front speakers made by Episode play as well as my back speakers made by Paradigm, but are priced at about half that of the Paradigms.

Have you heard any of those speakers that you bury in the ground? They're pretty big and include a subwoofer. I might try those once the frogs give out. Go frogs go! I agree that stereo isn't important out in the yard, btw.

check http://www.accessories4less.com  for good prices (30-65% discounts) on a good selection of outdoor speakers from Kef and Boston Acoustic.  A lot of what they sell is factory refurbished, with full original warranties.  I bought a pair of Kef bookshelf speakers there a few years ago at about 50% off retail, and no problems.  Factory refurbished in some ways is better than new, since it went back to the manufacturer (often for minor aesthetic issue) and is scrubbed to make sure that the item has no more issues.

Thanks for the link!

i apologize, i haven't back-scrolled

but i'd probably do a setup like this (better sound, easier to mount/wire if they are attached to your home and the elements are hard on such equipment)

a good remote would be essential too (not only adjusting volume but music selection and muting for phone calls and communication)

Listen, we bought some speakers that look like frogs because what do you mean because? Duh. Frogs. And they were cheap. But they do not sound like outdoor speakers in the sense of a McDonald's drive-thru. There's actually a sense of bass which is difficult outdoors. If we put on music that needs to be blasted to enjoy, well I suppose they would get pretty thin. But putting on Dead Can Dance at a don't-annoy-the-neighbors volume sounds great. The trick is getting the volume right so that you can hear it but so you're not shouting over it We take the iPad out with us and can use it to control iTunes inside the house, or we can also use the iPad to play directly, say via the RP app, to the Airport Express that's connected to the stereo inside the house.

The ones we had before were about $100, and they sounded good too but like I say, I assume they froze because they got real rattly last spring when we tried them out. But they froze for several years no problems. I think they were these ones but I don't remember. The shape looks familiar. Note that the first pair we got included something like 25' of outdoor speaker wire, which is sheathed in another layer of plastic. That's not very much but it's enough to get in under the house where I spliced into normal speaker wire. Yes it was a pain to run the wire out there but now it's there so hey.

I'll be watching for them, now, thanks! {#Jump}
