winter wrote: Haven't read the books, but I've seen the first two movies. SO not my thing.
And am I the only one who wonders why a guy who's over a century old is not only still in high school, but still pursuing high school girls? Because eww.
He's still in HS because they don't age and look like they did when they "turned." They try to blend in, so they pretend to be what they look like. And he's not "pursuing HS girls," its just about him and Bella. Not reality, just teenage romance. Like a lot of fiction, there's a lot of things that make you pause if you think too hard. Your not supposed to focus on that... at the bottom line, Bella never really fits in with normal people, Edward has been waiting 100 years for her, they are soul mates, blah-blah-blah... swoonalicious to a 14 year old who's best prospect is the average HS boy. Not so swoonworthy, generally —- they have zits and say stupid things and fart. I'd go so far, based on the kids I know in the target age range that this goes beyond swoonalicious. At that age, every girl wants to be swept off her feet and every boy wants to be a hero —— even if its just a little bit. And I think that's what's really gotten so many of them rabid about this series. Thankfully, it includes some pretty basic core values like family, loyalty, etc. The fuss over Twilight amongst adults reminds me of the "Harry Potter is a Devil Worshiper" and "Teletubbies are stupid!" stuff... you're not supposed to get it, really. I like the books and have read them for recreation, as well as with a critical eye. I like to be up on the stuff kids in my life are into and this one just happened to entertain me. Don't get me started on the pain I suffered trying to see anime/manga as anything other than animated soft-core but I watched some of it because one of the kids was into it. I try to have a basic knowledge of what they are interested in. Its always good to be able to hold a conversation with them about the things they are passionate about. Edit: In the interest of full disclosure, I should say, I really enjoy the Teletubbies and Sesame Street to this day... I'm 37. I still think SS is some of the smartest TV programming around.
