From a new book on surveillance capitalism:

What Is Facebook?

The pace at which Facebook ramped up its surveillance efforts seems to have been set by Facebook’s competitive landscape. The more competitors Facebook had, the better it behaved. Every time a major competitor foundered, Facebook’s behavior got markedly worse.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg stoked Washington’s fears about TikTok
Few tech companies have as much to gain as Facebook from TikTok’s travails, and the social-media giant has taken an active role in raising concerns about the popular app and its Chinese owners.

In addition to Zuckerberg’s personal outreach and public statements about Chinese competition, Facebook has established an advocacy group, called American Edge, that has begun running ads extolling U.S. tech companies for their contributions to American economic might, national security and cultural influence. And Facebook overall in the first half of this year spent more on lobbying than any single company, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics. In 2018, by contrast, it ranked eighth among companies, the center’s data show.

Facebook's Secret Censorship Manual Exposed as Platform Takes Down Video About Israel Terrorizing Palestinians
After the New York Times on Thursday published an exposé of Facebook's global censorship rulebook, journalist Rania Khalek called out the social media giant for taking down a video in which she explains how, "on top of being occupied, colonized territory, Palestine is Israel's personal laboratory for testing, refining, and showcasing methods and weapons of domination and control." Damage control...
Cambridge Analytica: Facebook row firm boss suspended

A statement from Cambridge Analytica's board of directors said Mr Nix had been suspended with "immediate effect, pending a full, independent investigation".

It added: "In the view of the board, Mr Nix's recent comments secretly recorded by Channel 4 and other allegations do not represent the values or operations of the firm and his suspension reflects the seriousness with which we view this violation."

The firm's chief data officer, Dr Alexander Tayler - who was also filmed discussing campaign strategy for Mr Trump - will serve as acting CEO.

(...) Facebook shares fell by a further 5% on Tuesday, following a 6.7% drop on Monday, meaning that in total, about $50bn has been wiped from its market value.

I already have friends (some from here) who promote their home business (etsy, avon, etc.) on FB and while I'm not interested in that, per se, I don't really begrudge them that. If they pay to make sure their post cuts thru some of the Very Important Cat Pictures that are usually on my wall, I probably won't notice it any more than I do the sponsored posts from Amazon, where the same old post climbs to the top of my feed every other day for a couple of weeks.

When our March of Dimes event comes around, we might try a promoted post just to see how that goes.

Agreed. I think it's going to end up that I'm gonna need to unlike certain companies in order to not see their posts. I guess.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind small businesses doing it.
