I'm considering re-ripping all of my CDs because I was "extravagant" 10 years ago and went with the huge 256 size. But now, ripping to any lossy format is a waste of time. Just consider which formats will still be readable in 20 years... the more obscure ones may go away. If you're ripping to MP3, though, be sure you're using a good ripper. All bitrates are not equal. LAME encoding, etc. There are entire websites dedicated to that but don't bother because you don't want to go MP3 anyway. And, by the way, if you use an iPod and iTunes (possibly other products, I don't know), you can set iTunes to load the iPod and automatically downsample to 128MP3.
So FLAC would be best for new rips? Is there any audible difference between that and 256/320 kbps MP3's? (BTW, I understand that lossless formats are better, I just want to know if I would be able to tell a difference).

Or should I just get everything in FLAC or something like that? P.S. I have pretty good headphones, so I'd be able to hear some differences. I just want other people's opinion on differences in quality.
