I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the advice- and especially to Omega Concern for his comprehensive list. It's for a colleague with whom I work very closely and he's had a sudden last minute chance to go to Boston to accompany his girlfriend on a work trip. Let's hope the weather perks up a bit by next weekend or he's going to have a damp time on his break!

Another fantastic museum to see in Boston is the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Definitely worth it! There are some original Winslow Homer paintings, John Singer Sargent originals and some other good stuff there. www.gardnermuseum.org

Maybe we can get together — so I can keep you calm. You know me pretty well for someone who has never met me! I think one of the biggest items on my "to do" list to prepare for my interview is "Stay Calm, DAMMIT!" There was a time when the Red Sox had the best away attendance record in baseball. I wonder if that is still true?

The Nationals do not draw very well — ask Bokey or Zep. But they had 41,000 or so each night for the Red Sox (Tuesday through Thursday). A friend of mine who lives here but raised in Boston said it was like being in Fenway in terms of the crowd. The Yankees also draw well, but not to that degree. Of course, the Orioles draw a big crowd when they visit.
The Cardinal and Philly fans also show up in big numbers, I have noticed. Those of us who are Pirate fans, well, let's just say we have our choice of seats.

Hmmm...what age range and interest? 1) Grab a copy of the Phoenix (local "aht" and entertainment mag.), see who's playing, what's showing, museums, etc. 2) Freedom Trail - takes you through the most important historical sites in Boston, mostly pertaining to the revolution. 3) 2 words - Duck Tour. Amphibious vehicle, drives you through Boston, then into the "Chahles" River. Duck Tours are pretty cool and fairly comprehensive in any city they're offered. 4) Lunch - from the Freedom Trail, off State Street and Congress (site of the "Boston Massacah"), if you're standing at the doors of the 60 State Street Building (large Bank of America in the lobby, like 63 ATMs), go left down State Street about 1 1/2 blocks to Al's. Order the Italian. If you get there at the right time, the bread's still warm. I miss Al's. 5) Dessert - "Finale" - there's one in Brookline, off the C line (Coolidge Corner), off the Red Line in Hahvahad Squahe or off the Green Line at Pahk Plaza by the Pahk Plaza Hotel. http://www.finaledesserts.com/ If you do nothing else, go to Finale. Screw the Freedom Trail, try the Molten Chocolate Cake and the Creme Brulee. NOTE - don't expect dinner here (Lunch maybe - sandwiches. soup). Eat, then go here for dessert. 6) Remember not to pronounce the letteh "ah" (that would be the one that looks like "R") unless it stahts a word. Mass. may have ratified the Constitution, but they never ratified the letter "R". Repeat after me: "It's wicked hahd to pahk the cah in Hahvahd Yahd aftah dahk." 7) You're on RP, so you're a music fan. Newbury Comics - awesome music store (also comics), locations all over Bahstin, the one on Newbury Street is probably best. Green Line to Hines Convention Center, exit, go right, go right and you're on Newbury Street, go down about a block on the right side (unless you take the dingy, urine soaked exit that leaves you right on Newbury St., in which case, make only one right. If you exit and overlook the freeway, go right, right). 8) That's it off the top of my head. Good luck! 9) Oh yeah - bars close at 2, train stops running around 12 so bring cab fare. 10) Ok - not done yet: Boston Beer Works. Have a beer (REALLY good beer), skip the food unless it's the nachos. If you do get the nachos, bring back-up. It's rare that someone finish a full order (they do offer 1/2) alone.

There is a tour provider called "Boston By Foot" who conducts different themed walking tours of Boston. I believe they have one dedicated to architecture. There is so much old and new amazing architecture in town, your friend will not have any trouble finding interesting things to visit. The old Churches I find to be the most interesting, esp. Trinity Church and the Old North Church (oldest in the City). Make sure you tell him to go to the top of the Prudential building to their observation deck, where there is a self-guided tour overlooking the city, and highlights cool historical buildings and a lot of the city's history. There is a restaurant too called Top of the Hub which is a fantastic place for dinner. Its right next to Prudential center shopping too, If they wanted to rent a car and do a day trip, send them down to Newport RI if it is a nice day, and have them do the mansion walk. Incredible tours along the cliffs of newport through mansions built in the late 1800's.
