Hundreds ill, one dead after unidentified disease hits city in India

At least one person has died and 200 others have been hospitalized due to an unidentified illness in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, reports said Monday.

The illness was detected Saturday evening in Eluru, an ancient city famous for its hand-woven products. Since then, patients have experienced symptoms ranging from nausea and anxiety to loss of consciousness, doctors said.

maybe poor plumbing? (i'm not a detective but this reminds me of chemical exposure)
What are the symptoms of exposure to sewer gas?

If sewer gas is present in your home, the first sign you may notice is the smell of rotten eggs. You may also experience various symptoms of exposure, such as:

It’s uncommon to be exposed to high levels of sewer gas at home. However, high levels of sewer gas exposure can occur in industrial workplaces. The symptoms include:

  • loss of smell (you’ll no longer be able to smell the rotten egg odor of sewer gas)
  • mouth, throat, and lung irritation
  • eye irritation and pink eye
  • seizures
  • coma
  • possibly death

The USPS seems frozen.

I've got 4 packages going out in different directions in the country and they all seem to have stopped going anywhere over the weekend and now will all be late.

Mail now for Christmas 2021.  It might get there on time if the Apocalypse struggles and fails like everything else seems to be doing right now ...

I'd send thoughts and prayers but they wouldn't arrive in time

oh cripes.  let's hope not. The thought at the back of my mind during this entire Covid pandemic has been that, despite all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, this has been a pretty benign epidemic compared to what we could potentially be hit by.

Hiring and promotion freeze in effect (since when I don't know); if they lose someone due to covid, a postmaster for example, they can't elevate someone to that job. They can only transfer in at the same rate. Who would do that? Even if it's a lateral move, it will mean moving house and more work etc. One local small town (1000 pop) post office has had 4 acting postmasters in 3 months. They get carriers with no experience to take the gig for a few weeks until they wash out because there's also no budget for training. Other postmasters in the area are volunteering to go help but that's only because their own jobs are made harder if that post office is such a cluster. They actually had the heat turned off because the last two hadn't paid any bills.
