Of playing
Playing with this bow and arrow
Gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I've been a temptress too long
Just
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be
A woman
I just wanna be a woman
From this time, unchained
We're all looking at a different picture
Through this new frame of mind
A thousand flowers could bloom
Move over, and give us some room
Yeah
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be
A woman
I just wanna be a woman
So don't you stop bein' a man
Just take a little look from our side when you can
Sow a little tenderness
No matter if you cry
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be here
A woman
It's all I wanna be is a woman
For this is the beginning of forever and ever
Its time to move over
I'm so tired, of playing
Playing with this bow and arrow
Gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I've been a temptress too long
I adore this track, it hits all the right spots. It's a solid 10 for me.
It is also one of those tracks that bridges time, it is simply timeless. I wonder if it will still be as wonderful in 30 years hence?
Yep...30+ years Squiddly...going strong...still a 10!
Would be funny to hear someone like Toby Keith or Leonard Cohen doing a cover of this song, without changing any of the lyrics, including "I just wanna be a woman".
It’s weird enough hearing the John Martyn version, which I think is excellent in its own right. See SECA_Alan’s great comment on that version re: hearing a male covering those lyrics.

the fact that you took your time to search all those emojis though, LMAO
suppose you gotta lotto time on your hands bbg
Very well stated! GREAT TUNE! Thanx RP!

Geez what a lot of bull....

...imagine the chagrin of someone back in '94 bringing it home from the record store (remember those?) on a brand new shiny digitally remastered Compact Disc

I brought it home on CD when it came out, I remember listening to it the first time - and loved it. Still do.
If I wasn't so high, I'd make some amazing earth shattering statement here. There was a time and this was important..... that's all I've got....
Don't worry, just enjoy the tune and your buzz. I am so lucky to be high while this tune is playing, absolutely excellent tune

I've always wondered if 'that bit' was sampled from that TV show theme tune. Does anyone know?

That's a completely awful misread of the lyric.
She wants him to treat her as more than a thing to have, more of an equal. She wants respect, romantic affection, etc. She wants him to try looking at things from her perspective. She wants to be in love with him, she wants to settle down, but she wants him to be worthy of her attentions.
She wants him to be a man. Otherwise, she'll just be a memory, a regret,
She's looking under rocks for a man.
What an outstanding album!
Totally agree. What a unique sound......especially when released!
Sounds like a vinyl recording. I hear those wonderful scratches, hisses, and pops!
Yes, I noticed that too. ...And, the low end sounds if it was mastered for vinyl.

Probably the best response to this line I have ever seen! @Solanus++ (always been a solid 10 for me, I only date women who fundamentally want this)
Great comment my friend. I was listening to it in realtime with you!
Really both are a amazing. John Martyn got a 10 and Portishead a 9.5 which rounds up to a 10.

still . . .
7 ? what was i thinking ? 8 it is. might go to 9 if i think about it a little more....
Just now I went 7 to 8. A 9 is probable!
Sublime
oh to be back in Bristol during the 90s in the Thekla when Portishead and Massive Attack would play impromtu sets.
dem the days
Just to be back in the Thekla would be good ....

apologizes for the un-PC-ness
According to the rules of Krek Waiter's Peak Bristle it should be Port Zed
Blige, that's going back a bit, friend.

Those were the days, friend. When I was just young enough to get away with it, too.

Yup.

Does John Martyn sing "...a woman"? I could look it up...
Great comment my friend. I was listening to it in realtime with you!
You're welcome!
Yes, Portishead's is very haunting but JM adds soul and meaning IMO.
I would never down rate a track just because I don't like it so kudos to the 8.3 from other listeners. LLRP

BTW This is one of the first tracks I found on Napster.
The former is correct.

terrific bluesy guitar.
The former is correct.
Portishead is a seaside resort on the Bristol Channel in North Somerset, England.
Tony Jory
terrific bluesy guitar.
Portis-head. It's a town near Bristol in the UK where Portishead are from.

I do.
It's liberating!

It hits all the right spots in my soul, too, and also gets a 10 from me.
I suspect it will withstand the test of time ... if it is transferred to whatever muscial medium replaces albums, cassette tapes, laser discs, CDs, mp3s, ....
True. This song is doing things to a man's mind, strange things...
I don't know if it's a direct correlation to my "mind" necessarily.

Just exactly what VH1 needs to hear.
Very retro sampling

They sampled "Ike's Rap II" by Isaac Hayes for this one. Very cool!

It's already 25 years old.

Rating to me 8 - Most Excellent

I've been wondering the same thing... but I don't dare to google it.

Translation: "Be a man."

i haven't heard that sound in decades
is Bill playing vinyl?
or is it an add-on for effect?
Its on the original recording, so most likely an effect added, or from a vinyl record being mixed in
Its definitely from a record mixed in.
I remastered this song and took all the pops and clicks out just to hear it without. Like it either way.

This is the first comment I ever remember reading on RP and I still laugh about it...

Shouldn't that be ' Gold HOOVER Portis Frapp PHONIC Head '?
Not complaining though. It's still good.
This scores a 10 on my scale, which basically means: “it is impossible to play this too often,” within limits of reasonable behaviour of course. This was last played five days ago, which is perfectly reasonable. Once every day would still be reasonable. Once every 30 minutes would not be reasonable, as I experienced first-hand through a colleague who once had a 7-song playlist on endless repeat… Which actually was what made me search for a good internet radio to escape from it, and then I found RP, so at least one good thing came out of it.
Not complaining though. It's still good.
seems like it faded out early...
Leave them wanting more. you can always buy it and put it on repeat, Musical business sense, y'see?
It is like Dire Straits... a little to much on RP.

It gets played now and then.
Ahhh but I remember the gigs and the vibe around Bristol Uni around 1996, bands like Morcheeba and Portishead were plenty and triphoped potheads ruled.
I'm still here, I just got older.

Hi there fellow ex Bristol-Poly&Uni-ites. i was at Bristol Poly '85 - '88 (HND Electronic Engineering)
Loved that city and its people, The Granary, The Crown, The Mardyke, etc etc
If i'd known then what i know now, i'd've stayed there too!
PS used to cover Glorybox in my last band (with a female singer). I liked playing that one.
