Sing your Sacred Harp, you be holier than the rest
Fill up the room with a grand and thunderous song
let it rattle out the windows
let is spill out on the lawn
Shout, shout your praises to the man
who kissed the lord
to the back stabbing brother
that betrayed all of this world
Your Judas
Yes, though you may walk in the valley of the dark
there's no greater evil that the darkness in your heart
with your stun guns, bloodhounds

your nylon shackle whipping post
your high tech burning tire
your Judas
Whiplash crack across the back, across the arms
and although you bound his feet, he running fast

WTF do you care. About others opinions!! YOU don’t deserve this station. Mind your own business
Indeed.... the song does end with a list of the most racist states in America, all of which benefited the most from African chattel slavery, went to war with our country to keep it, and have continued to oppress their black citizens in every way that they can think of (latest flavor: voter suppression) to this very day.
2021 update: Oh, and now denying them food and water while they are forced to wait in line for 8-10 hours to exercise their constitutional right. Looking at you Georgia (and all your h8ful komeraden prepared to follow suit).
Do I detect some classic white-savior action? So boorish. Truth is no one cares and our black family and friends don't need to be infantilized...they got this.

Yawn. And you and I probably vote the same.
Maybe they grew up with bleating goats?
Who would rate this song a 10?
Why are you asking?
I dunno....I'll take a stab, as an American, at what she's talking about. It comes down to one simple word. Racism, and that which some white brothers and sisters have done to their brothers (and sisters) of a different skin. Just a guess of course. Anyone else?

I think the OP was commenting on her enunciation, not the message/meaning. (but that's just my take...)
Natalie, your patriotic points just went way up with me.
Patron of lost causes.
from wiki : In the Roman Catholic Church, he is the patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes.[8]
I prefer to think of this as a desperate case and not a lost cause. I love Natalie's Merchant's voice and artistry, and love RP for playing this, especially now after Jan 6. Let's rally around decency!
'djyew have?'

Prejudice, at least.
Sorry that's not "distinctive voice" that's Kermit The Frog yodeling. Blech. Awful damn noise.

I'm not a fan of Ms. Merchant, but she has got a distinctive voice.
Interesting thought. It struck me while listening to this again that I don't like Natalie's voice when she sings in a lower key and slower place. She has a nice for some songs but I don't think she has much of an expressive range.
I guess Natalie wasn't "suckin it" back in 2001 when she recorded this gem either.

I really digg the rythm of the bass and drums. It's kind of looping along, along with Erik Della Penna tickling of the banjo.
Perhaps that word does not mean what you think it means. If a woman says I have a nice ass does this mean she hates men?
If you can't see that your need to comment on a female singers tits in a music discussion is out of line with the way nobody mentions that dudes can't sing a lick but have a nice package then I feel genuinely sorry for you.
Nice typing, the misogyny not so much.

I am such a sucker for a banjo
Okay, followed by China Bird. I bow to the master. I renounce any claim to harp about NM ever ever again. Radio Magic.

this is why we love her, and why see does not get played on mainstream radio, she tells the truth. most can't handel that..........
Whoah. Thanks.
Personally, I love her voice. Sure are a lot of whiny RP listeners that come out of the woodwork we she comes on.
this is why she is loved and rairly played. we love her, mainstreem is afraid of her.

It might be all right if she could sing instead of YODEL.
ICK.
Please consider this a SPAM for anything and everything RP plays by her.

Saw her a couple of years ago and her band were so tight.
Gone a bit quite of late though.

Didn't I see you in the very early eliminations of last comic standing?
For me, it's a timbre and enunciation thing. For the life of me, I can never understand a single thing she's singing. Vote < 4.
I see your point and you are correct, I cannot stand Natalies voice, but I love Waits and Reed so yes it is indeed a subjective thing.

As a man I can tell you that her "carefully displayed headlights" are not enough to attract me, and her voice is off-putting especially on this cut. . .
I love your phrase, btw, and I quoted it as an homage. . .
Simply horrible.
Vocals + Guitar/banjo = most excellent (8); muddy bass and flat drums = marginal at best (0). Well she got the important parts right. 8+0 = 8.
Is that because you can't understand what the hell either one of them is singing?
I am not so sure if this is criticism of a vocal style or simply the adept use of a thesaurus.
hell yes!
double ditto
I like it.
hell yes!
I like it.
Not being raised up with the maniacs I hear her voice like it is now. And what I hear is an excellent soulful singer. Mavis Staples sings background here. That's the class we're talking about here.
Apart from that - the heavy guitar work is great.
I know! What happened to her voice? I used to like her but she sounds awful now. Ack! Make it stop!
Actually, I think she sounds like the love child of Pee-wee Herman and a goat. BAAAAAA....
I think you've nailed it! no me gusta. That's all I'll say. Oh, and Baaaah!!!!
Interesting scoring criteria... I cant imagine what song could ever get a 10. As much as I like my favorites, I don't think I would want to listen to them 100% of the time, it would kinda ruin the "eclectic" part.
If you get close to your monitor and look slightly cross-eyed so that one of the columns of emoticons from the right eye's visual field overlaps with one of the columns from the left field, the emoticon assemblage will become the only "real" looking part of your binocular field; everything else recedes to a blurry second plane. Moving your head from side to side enhances the illusion of spatial depth.
That said, she looks pretty good.
Her voice can be quite irksome sometimes, but that is a nice photo of her. (I know - that's a shallow comment)
Actually, I think she sounds like the love child of Pee-wee Herman and a goat. BAAAAAA....
LOL, yeah the beginning of the song, I swore it was Beth.
Great comment, L'il Orphan Annie would approve.................
Sure didn't pick this for NM!
Almost reminded me of Joan Armitrading, love the banjo!
But, I really do like this track.
