He stumbled into faith and thought
God this is all
There is
The pictures in his mind arose
And began
To breathe
And all the gods in all the worlds
Began colliding on a backdrop of blue

Blue lips
Blue veins

He took a step
But then felt tired
He said, I'll rest
A little while
But when he tried
To walk again
He wasn't
A child
And all the people hurried past
Real fast and no one ever smiled

Blue lips
Blue veins
Blue, the color of our planet from far, far away
Blue lips
Blue veins
Blue, the color of our planet from far, far away

He stumbled into faith and thought
God this is all
There is
The pictures in his mind arose
And began
To breathe
And no one saw and no one heard
They just followed
Lead
The pictures in his mind awoke
And began
To breed

They started off beneath the knowledge tree
Then they chopped it down to make white picket fences
They marched along the railroad tracks
And smiled real wide for the camera lenses
They made it past the enemy lines
Just to become enslaved in the assembly lines

Blue lips
Blue veins
Blue, the color of our planet from far, far away
Blue lips
Blue veins
Blue, the color of our planet from far, far away
Blue
The most human color
Blue
The most human color
Blue
The most human color
Blue lips
Blue veins
Blue, the color of the planet from far, far away

Seems to me the guy in the lyrics got blue lips and veins as "he stumbled into faith" -- just before he died, unnoticed by all the people hurrying past in the hustle-bustle of 21st century life.

As babies, we start at the base of the Tree of Life, but cut up our childlike transcendent knowledge into white picket fences as we mature into adults, trying to make sense of an irrational existence. As young people we "Fight the Power!" and shout "Down With the Man!" until we make it past the enemy lines, stop fighting, and become enslaved in the assembly lines in our own attempt to become one of The Man and achieve societal success.
..........

Got to get back to work -- I am just another wage slave on an assembly line for at least another 12 months until retirement.  And I hope my lips and veins stay pink until then!

Hope you doing well and enjoy healthy your retirement.
Love everything she does.
Orange lips.
This is a big nope.  I gave it a solid 2.

Maybe he means AWE-FUL, as in inducing awe.

Maybe they meant "full of awe"? Because I would tend to agree. Love her voice and this composition.
A song called blue lips following the Stones... If I didn't know you better Bill, I would say that was just pure coincidence.

I read it as 'awe full' (orig = aweful)
which means he obviously liked it a lot.

Maybe they mean it fills them full of awe?

Brilliant
I just realized that the songs "Blue Lips" and "Up the Mountain" are both from her. Completely different. Each of them fantastic. Thanks RP for introducing her. She's awesome.

Maybe she's talking about someone who died?
I like some stuff by Regina, but this song is hard to even listen to. It’s just bad. I always have to skip to avoid gouging my ears with a fork

I think the point they were originally making was that this inspires awe in them. I agree. Much better than good. Completely full of awe.
blue
The more I hear of her, the more I am smitten...
A lovely elegy to the colour blue :o)
Really awesome album cover. I can see how being able to create music would make people feel that way. Alas we have to settle for an apartment with a great view of the lake from the window…

Maybe its a pun "Full Of Awe"
much like the Decemberists:
at first i really liked her (and Colin's) vocal styling, but as time passed, it became annoying
still, a good song and good lyrics.......i dunno

still good
but anoyying

does that even make sense?
fuck it

The constant shift in cadence is exhausting. I really like RS...but this tune has such a stressful stop 'n start feel. I think I need a drink. Maybe two. :)

Not really, just that her voice kind of fits. Look up Tullycraft
Did you hear her perform in Russian on her album "what we saw from the cheap seats"? Amazing

I'll go +1 to 7 for the lyrics, and +1 to 8 for her role in the (mostly Jakob Dylan) documentary called "Echo in the Canyon" - I gained a lot of respect for her and Jade; great voices...and even Fiona Apple makes an appearance and didn't make me sucko-barfo once...LLRP!!

I can't tell if you like this or not.
I'm a big fan of Regina Spektor since her early, quirky, days, and while she remains eclectic, this entire album is more accessible and possibly my favorite of her catalog.
Like the voice, arrangement, lyrics!  rate 9

Not real familiar with her. Great voice. Hope she found something better to sing subsequent to this.

on the "blue lips, blue veins etc." parts she sounds like that hayseed boy scout that sings for Cloud Cult

Very clever, RP: playing two songs in a row in the same key, same young voice, same style. Me likey!

Aweful. Just plain aweful. Can't believe someone thought this is a good song.

Normally I'd agree. But hit this on the mobile app, and you get silence. Which I prefer to this song. Unfortunately after the silence, the song re-loads and plays from the start. Mute is the only solution.

And one week after the above, here we are again. Muting.

That was apparently a bug in the app. I had it, too. After using the newer Beta-Version it went away. I think. Anyway it works now,

Loving her more all the time and the album this is off is one of my favourite and most played albums of late
Regina Spektor - I love her. Got to listen to her music via my music-hero Ben Folds.
As I listened to the words, the music really fits and I wanna hear more of this woman; good lyrics, as I read more of them...

I am liking her more and more lately.  Just when you think she is going to do something she goes into something completely different.
If you are interested, she was interviewed today on NPR's Fresh Air.
the refrain to the part without drums and energy really die.
I like this song. It puts a smile on my face and challenges another wrinkle in my brain.
Would much prefer "small blue thing" by Suzanne Vega

After all this time, I still have no idea what this song is about, but I love it.

Please never play this awful schlock again. Thanks.
Great voice, awful song nonetheless... this is a great example, IMO, that music is not only about nice sounds.
Artists who use phrasing to make a point or paint an emotion do it for me. Yes, I'm a great big 'ol CAKE fan.

Hmm, interesting. To me, Blue Lips is one of the best songs on Far. De gustibus non est discutandum, I guess

Can't stand her voice. And I like a lot of artists with "weird" voices (Bjork, Joanna Newsom...)

I don't think she meant this in a literal sense... I've always interpreted it as being more about all the chaos in this world, in which case, blue is definitely the most human color... sad, but true.

Sad, yes and simply the colors of the ocean, sky and our emotions.  Beautiful!
