Dawn is breaking everywhere, light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains I don't care, 'cause it's all right
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.
I see you've got your list out, say your peace and get out.
Yes I get the gist of it, but it's all right
Sorry that you feel that way, the only thing there is to say is...
Every silver lining's got a touch of grey.
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.
It's a lesson to me, the Ables on the bakers and the c's
The abc's we all must face, try to keep a little grace
Chorus
It's a lesson to me,
The Delta's or the East and the freezes.
The abc's-- we all think of, and try to keep a little love.
I know the rent is in arrears
the dog has not been fed in years
it's even worse than it appears but, it's all right
Cow is giving kerosene, kid can't read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene, but it's all right
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.
The shoe on the hand that fits, there's really nothin' much to it
Whistle through your teeth and spit, 'cause it's all right
Oh well a touch of grey, kinda suits you anyway,
That is all I had to say, if it's all right
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive.
We will get by... X3 then fade
We will survive!
Haters ate some bad sauerkraut. No Dead fan here, but this is a fun, witty, tuneful track. Kudos to the craftsmen.
Or some bad licorice? Not a Dead fan in the least, but I love licorice.
Like it or not, it did introduce many GenX/MTV Generation types to the Dead for the first time, and many of us have gone on to appreciate the Dead more fully from there...
That's me. Never heard of them before this tune. Not a Dead-head, but like some of their stuff. They are definitely respectable as a musical force. Just don't play Ripple, please. ;)
Another Dead song, another feeding frenzy for the haters, another altar for the faithful, another day.
I, too, have followed them from the beginning—in fact from the time they were The Warlocks, and regardless of what you think of its place in the greater canon of their work, this is a pretty cool song. Garcia's solo could serve as an object lesson to beginning guitarists on how to build your solo around the song's melody.
I miss Jerry as a creative force. No matter where he was, no matter the genre, he made things happen.
This is the song that introduced this GenXer to the Dead. My sister was a Deadhead, but I didn't hear much of the band until this arrived on MTV. * While I never rose to the level of Deadhead devotion, to this day I enjoy many of their albums and feel lucky I had the chance to see them live before Jerry passed.
*Edit - Apparently I already mentioned this below, apologies...
...wondering how my Jerry Garcia tie would look with a tie die T...
Hey, I wore a Jerry Garcia tie to work for years!
Worst dead song ever
Not even close!
By the way, check out the War on Drugs cover of this, if you like this song that version will not disappoint.
This song proves you you don't need any talent to make it as a rock band.
We're all waiting for your contribution

Being a non-Deadhead who changed the channel on the seemingly same 3 roboplay FM Dead songs, I have to say this is one of the best songs they ever recorded.
Thanks B&R!
My favorite Traveling Wilburys tune.
For me, it's the only tolerable Dead song.
Funny. I've said that many times about earlier Dead ditties. Tracks like THIS would have made me more of a fan. It sounds like they were in tune and wry and sober.
Ha! Overplayed as it is I have to admit that this was the first Dead song I ever really liked. Not much of a fan I guess. I also really liked the song Shakedown Street(!!) which is sacrilege to many Deadheads.
I disagree. For me, it's one of their better tunes. It's witty, doesn't meander, has a catchy melody and, unlike at least some of their live tracks, is actually in tune and key!
Spoken like a true non-Deadhead!
I'm only partially a fan of the greater GD catalog , appreciate them a lot, and personally I rate this an 8.
Oh man, back when MTV was relevant! This video, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Genesis' Land of Confusion... The 80s gave us quite a few gems. Some of them don't hold up without nostalgia-goggles (Dire Straits' Money for Nothing, I'm looking at you) but I love them all the same.
What, they didn't give you enough albums and shows over 30 years? So they went Top-40 for one song. Not a sacrilege.
It may also depend upon which drugs one is talking about.
As they say here, "we smoked it all."
save some for this July...
sent in my envelop and fingers crossed
As they say here, "we smoked it all."
Mostly agree, just need to remove the word "Dead".....
Agree
I'll have to check it out...with an open mind of course. I'm glad the GD bring so much joy to so many people. That, to me, is what music is all about. Not a hater, I just don't prefer them.
As one of the faithful, I thank you for your words.
I'm thankful he said "canon" and not "cannon".
I see you've got your list out, say your piece and get out
Guess I get the gist of it, but it's alright
Sorry that you feel that way.

the most WELL NAMED band...

Ho man, you really hit the nail with this one WonderLizard!
I actually Love this song for what it represents (Jerry coming back for Round 2). And I totally dig the guitar solo. Wiht the comment above, I now have a handle with which to listen to it, building around the melody. Perfect.
And yes, there is a Lion in that man.

Not really. I could probably easily name 50 Dead tunes that I love right off the top of my head. There are only a handful that I don't care for - this being one.
This is the only Dead song I could name off the top of my head and probably only if heard it playing. Never could get into the Dead...at all and this is probably the one and only song I ever liked (not so much anymore because of the massive overplay in the summer of 87).
