I've wept for those who suffer long,
But now I weep for those who've gone.
Into rooms of grief and questioned wrong,
But keep on killing.
It's in the soul to feel such things,
But weak to watch without speaking.
Oh what mercy sadness brings,
If God be willing.
There is a train that's heading straight
To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate.
And on the way, child and man
And woman wait, watch and wait.
For redemption day.
Fire rages in the streets,
And swallows everything it meets.
It's just an image often seen,
On television.
Come leaders, come you men of great,
Let us hear you pontificate.
Your many virtues laid to waste
And we aren't listening.
What do you have for us today,
Throw us a bone but save the plate.
Oh why we waited til so late,
Was there no oil to excavate
No riches in trade for the fate
Of every person who died in hate
Throw us a bone, you men of great.
There is a train that's heading straight
To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate.
And on the way, child and man
And woman wait, watch and wait.
For redemption day.
It's buried in the countryside,
It's exploding in the shells of night,
It's everywhere a baby cries,
Freedom, freedom.
Freedom, freedom.
Freedom.
But now I weep for those who've gone.

A great lady, heart, brains, passion, moral courage and looks - a total package. Just read her Wikipedia bio, couldn't find anything I didn't like or would question, except perhaps a couple of her liaisons, which fall into the "What were you thinking, when I'm available?" category. There's no accounting for taste, eh?
No one would ever accuse me of grade inflation, but I gave this a "9" - nooo, just on the music! I am surprised this masterpiece has not even reached "7" yet.
Great song on a great album. Her best.

Also, there's the Lizardman constant. Some people (4%, probably male) just want to mess with whatever survey you're trying to run.

Uh oh.
Redemption.
Shall we consider redemption on a cold Jan 2024 morning? I think not. Where are my happy pills?

I love the transitions from 4/4 to 2/4. Very effective.
This is a fantastic album - if you like this and don't know the album - get it!

Combined with the cycling use of the word "Fred" and her connection to Lancey Pants, I'd say this was a doubly wasted moment.

Freedom - sovereignty of one's body and the ability to care for those you love. In case any one was wondering about it in the wake of its abuse in the mouths of politicians, freedom starts there.

I've heard this silly argument from lots of RP listeners. And it's a stupid comment. Just because I, or other people, listen and enjoy some of the music on this station does not in any way mean we will like hearing everything. In fact there are several artists played here who I would be glad if I never heard of again, but I do listen because there has been some different music I have enjoyed. Also, RP makes good background noise while at work. However, many of the listeners here seem to think that every single song Bill plays is some paragon of musical excellence. Heaven forbid one finds a certain style or artist "annoying". Or heaven forbid one simply hates hearing music from a "legendary" artist, or in Crowe's case "not so legendary". Then the silly comments such as the one above come out. Deal with it people, we all have different likes and tastes. Heaven knows people dislike lots of music I enjoy, but to post a quote such as the one above is a bit much.

I think its worth saying here that this song was chosen by Johnny Cash to cover on his American VI. If you listen to his version you will FEEL the gravity of those lyrics in a way that Sheryl's version, despite being the original, doesn't quite gather.

I don't mind the low marks, but I object to people not spelling an artist's name correctly.

I actually like Sheryl Crow - both as a singer and as someone who, for a short time, dated the fallen cycling icon Lance Armstrong. The latter connection did not end well for her but I think she dodged a bullet on that one and she was better off without him. Some have mentioned her whining voice - I don't agree - I liked her young, sassy and foxy voice with a hint of Country twang back in the late 90's and yes, I also liked one of her contemporaries - Alanis Morissette. Neither are particularly liked on RP and neither really made it 'big' in the following decades, but that is OK. it's only music after all and they still made their mark - albeit a short one.

Following up "Porcupine Tree's — Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled" which samples the cult leader from Heaven's Gate, with Redemption Day that has "Heavens Gate" prominently in the refrain. Masterful transition, guys.
Outstanding!

She was really good during this period, and has continued to be so. Has she decided to retire from music and be a mom? Huffington Post says she's planning a new release in September that will be countrified. Not far from most of her stuff anyway, IMO.
Doesn't stress her limited vocal range. Not painful.
oh hell no........psd, yay!
The forced gritty voice reminds me of The Stereophonics and not in a good way.
It's not bad, and I really like Sheryl Crow... But I just have to say: Johnny Cash's version is much better!
Not a fan but this wasn't half bad

A lot of comments about Sheryl's vocal strength and it makees wonder if there's a double standard with female artists. Do men's voices catch the same scrutiny? It's not like she has a bad voice, it's just not as strong as other women's singers'. How many male artists don't even bother to sing or, sing with "character?" I think women are held to a much higher standard.
I actually had a vocal coach tell me that this is true. She mentioned that there is so much pressure on women artists to be perfect at all times, yet for men it wasn't as important. I wonder if it has something to do with the higher ranges...perhaps in higher ranges, flaws are heard more easily because of the impact on the nervous system, where lower ranges are more soothing, so errors are not that big a deal.
Just speculating...

Terrific song pity about the voice
You know, I generally like Cheryl Crow. I"ve never heard this before and I think it' harsh and obnoxious sounding.

While I don't loathe Cheryl Crow, I don't really like her either. Not sure what it is about her songs, but I just can barely stand to listen to them. I know that there are a lot of people out there who love her, so I don't want to begrudge them hearing her music here, but it does give me a 3 minute brake where I can go to the bathroom and not worry about missing something good.

My favorite Sheryl Crow song.
She sings like Lucinda William's kid sister.
Clearly it's just me, but her voice is so tinny and thin to me. I just don't get her at all.

I agree Joan would have an awesome voice for this.
I'd love to hear what Joan Osborne could do with this tune.

great music. I just wish she was a guy. No... I just wish she had a guy's voice.

All 3 of her first albums have real artistic merit, IMHO. I even really like #r4, C'Mon, C'Mon, which strikes me as a loving tribute to the 70s pop so many of us grew up on.
Hey, this is when Sheryl Crow was actually good.

Yup. Does a neat jazz thing on her first album, too. "We Do What We Can." A 10!

There was a brief period in my life when I had a decent cd player in my car, but I hadn't yet discovered used cd's . (Also, I was broke.) I would buy a cd after very careful deliberation and then play.it.to.death. Now, when I hear something from one of those 6 or 7 cds, I'm instantly transported back to that time, with all the moods and hassles I was dealing with flooding back.
RP has played songs from three of those tonight: Odelay, The Colour and the Shape, and this. I was listening to this very song when I made a major decision in my life, one that's affected nearly everything since. (It was a good decision.) I wouldn't take back the late 90's for anything, but I would never want to live through them again!

Dear Ms.Crow, Thanks alot for not releasing another lame song.
I do, however, have a complaint.
Now that everyone knows that you can achieve your musical potential, we have something of value to reference when you're sharing a greasy mic with Kid Rock or some other wonder of nature.

I would hardly say that she is persona non grata. Look at her ratings. Pretty solid. Don't focus so much on the haters who will rally to complain at every opportunity. Most people seem to be quietly enjoying her music without saying anything. I guess the rest are just the vocal minority.
I'm not up on all or any Sheryl Crow offenses but by the postings it seems she's a persona non grata around RP, even if Bill does play her music. I guess Sheryl Crow is comparable to the Dixie Chicks and conservatives. Well I don't have dog in this fight so I'll step aside and let you FIGHT ON!

OK, now I can state that I like a Cheryl Crow song. One.

Yarp. You no like the Sheryl? Seek out the song "Fun" by Kevin Gilbert (or any song, for that matter) and play it...loudly...any time your ears are maligned by this poseur. It'll make you feel good. Ok, well it works for me.

I was going to tune in, but saw that this was playing, so maybe I'll wait 4 minutes and try again. Sucko-Barfo all the way.

Wow - MrFixIt sounds a little bitter. Was it the TP thing?

That whole album is excellent, as this one.
Really personal album, I mean it makes me feel so deep and I feel connection with it.
Really good.
i watched Erin Brockovich this weekend (if that's how you spell her last name)...crow's music actually does a lot for that movie. i'm not a big julia roberts fan.
I see that she is a founding member of the Recording Artists' Coalition, which supports the rate hikes, but does that mean she herself supports it? I would imagine most artists would be against the hikes.

Never liked her (except when she sang "Leaving Las Vegas" and "All I Wanna Do", and the duet "Blue" with Zucchero, oh yea), can't understand why she has won even the first Grammy (unless for one of those songs), just can't stand that high-pitched whinny voice (except in those three songs and maybe that Steve McQueen song.

Just checking my rating. Yup, still an "8"!
Yes, well worthy of an eight I am certain.
Appropriate also as an Easter Friday meditation.
Intentioned I'm also quite sure.
