Looking out the door I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up with water
And maybe I'm too young
To keep good love from going wrong
But tonight you're on my mind so you'll never know

I'm broken down and hungry for your love
With no way to feed it
Where are you tonight?
Child, you know how much I need it

Too young to hold on
And too old to just break free and run

Sometimes a man gets carried away
When he feels like he should be having his fun
Much too blind to see the damage he's done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that, really,
He has no one

So I'll wait for you, love
And I'll burn
Will I ever see your sweet return
Oh, will I ever learn?
Oh, lover, you should've come over
Cause it's not too late

Lonely is the room, the bed is made
The open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him
My body turns and yearns for a sleep that won't ever come

It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over, all my riches for her smiles when I've slept so soft against her
It's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over, she is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever

Oh, but maybe I'm just too young
To keep good love from going wrong

Oh, lover, you should've come over

Yes, I feel too young to hold on
And much to old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb and blind to see the damage I've done
Sweet lover, you should've come over

Oh, love, well I've waited for you

Lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late

I wonder how many listeners who voted this a 10 have also endured at least one painful ending to a once intense relationship. The emotional connections between music and real life experiences are some of the most powerful forces on earth.

In my view, the music is even better than the vocals, but the combination is second to none. It's a 10 for me.
I vacillate between Jeff Buckley and Chris Cornell as the GOAT 🐐 ?! And no, not because I don’t also have deep love for Freddie! The Choir of Angels 👼🏼 will be Glorious to Behold, which is why I don’t fear the Afterlife 🙏🏽 [Sorry to rant on like some big tent ⛺️ revival 🙄]
Holy Lord! That Voice?! RIP Mr. Buckley!
Oh wow!! Something other than Hallelujah that shows what an insane amount of talent this guy had.  What a damn shame we lost him too soon.
Amazingly talented, Jeff.  Gone way too soon.  His voice makes me get goose bumps.
This is a 10 among 10s.

If you've ever felt what he's singing about, this song will brutalize you.
I practically cry when I hear his voice.  How he died, singing in the Mississippi never to be seen again.  And his childhood,  Child of a heroin addict.... His voice is just so haunting.  GRACE... What an album.  in my top 10 of all time...
Thanks Bill, thanks a lot. Just go ahead and follow this with Patty Griffin's 'Goodbye', and I'll be a complete wreck.
Reminds me, it's past time to put this album on in the workshop at full blast. Damn.

Pfffffft. Hand in your serious human being card.
One of the most heartfelt and ambitious singer/songwriters of his short short time...
Just marched through the house (cruising over to the volume knob) loudly proclaiming the fact "this is a ten, the rare ten".
each to their own - I think he was tremendous ...
this is just great, his pa's music was too...

Lovely song.  Beautiful voice.

Wow, what a shocking comment. Have you listened to the whole album? I think Jeff might have had one of the best male voices of all time, and I am a professional singer (so very picky and critical). Rarely do you find someone with the depth, range and control he had. Truly, a tragic loss, and we can only imagine what he might have gone on to do.

You must be deaf if you can't hear it.

The opening of this song had a "Us and Them" Floyd feel to it.... than again.... maybe it's just me..
now I hear Adam Lambert from American Idol...maybe just me again.

 annersjen wrote:

=shrug= I believe Jeff was one of the tragic losses of the late 20th Century, and while nagsheadlocal would disagree with that... I would disagree with his allocating a '10' to Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" or ANYTHING Alanis Morrissette has done.

Long live the healthy debate and instant democracy of Radio Paradise!!

Yeah, Jeff has a version of Mr. Cohen's song. I think Jeff's version is tied with Rufus Wainwright's, for pure vocal beauty.

But they are both second to the Maestro. I saw Leonard at Coachella last Friday (4/17). It was a life's dream realized.

I got to see Morrisey (he sucked), The Black Keys (rock-iron-roll!) and Paul McCartney the same night. Probably the best concert of my life.

Oh, yeah: nagsheadlocal, you can kiss my {#Ass}.

God forbid that the guy sings (sang) with a lot of emotion.  I guess you'd rather hear some Jimmy Buffett to keep yourselves nice and placated.

There's no denying the guy sang with a lot of emotion. But, I'm sorry, pouring your heart out, while it may be cathartic, is not the only component of good music. If that was the case, every emotional train wreck out there would be making top selling hits.

I rarely get maudlin about musicians dying young... it happens so damned often I guess you get used to it somehow.  But I first heard Jeff Buckley on a college radio station (Rollins College in Winter Park) about two years ago.  I did a u-turn and went to a music store and bought everything they had by him.  Come in the door, sit down at the computer and put this cd in the machine, and browse the web to learn about him.

He's already dead.

A serious bummer... and I am not ashamed to say I shed a few for him.
What a f&*king loss.....

not paying attention fully and the lead-in sounds like Us And Them. Big let down when it is this. Not horrid, but certainly not great, and definitely not PF.

Thank you for saying that. I get really sick of people being so very harsh about songs. You don't like it, fine. You can say that without being hateful. Unless the song is hateful in its purpose and meaning. Then it's ok.{#Daisy}

Okay, I was a little harsh there. This song is intensely personal for me (think about the metaphor in the opening verse not being a metaphor), and I reacted too strongly. Cool. I love a good flame as anyone else. Still a good song from a too soon lost talent. God what a set of pipes this guy had!
this tune had me drifting back and forth between digging it and cringeing at it. this is the first time i have heard of jeff buckley and i'm pretty sure i won't become a big jeff buckley fan, but i appreciate being exposed to it and all the other tunes that RP puts out. whether i dig them or cringe at them, they broaden my musical horizon.
This starts out pretty tolerable for Buckley. And then after that it's not.
I'm rating this more on the acoustic live in Japan version which was the first Jeff song I ever heard. The album version is definitely overcooked but that's the way of things... I think people post such aggressively negative stuff about Jeff partly because they know his fans are generally sensitive souls prone to teary outbursts - it's cheap entertainment for the emotionally stunted.

Ah, Jeff was put "out of his misery" as he drowned some years back. A great singer/songwriter. This song is a little overrought though although I love most of his music. He was a precious talent lost too early in his career. For shame. Oh, and to Robco1, you really need to chill out dude. He's entitled to his opinion as you are yours. We don't need visuals here on RP. Try to show some professionalism (if there is any to show).

Just the voice alone makes me get up, step away from the computer, and go do something else!
Great song, great voice, great CD...please play Lilac Wine from this CD sometime. He outdoes Nina Simone (almost).
I don't give many 3's, but Ho Hum is just such an apt description.
I like most of what I've heard of his...it goes back to that thing, loyalty and blind devotion to a singer or band..or simply admitting that they can produce crap at times too! (make of that what you will)
Just to evoke a moment to attach this song to... I had this on my MP3 player as my friends and I took our rafts for three weeks down the Grand Canyon. One night as the temperature barely dipped below 90, I lay out on my sleeping pad looking at the Arizona stars and listened to Jeff Buckley. I turned on my headlamp to read, and was immediately swarmed by some kind of non-biting bug. Millions of them. Billions! I was just about to turn the light off when I saw hundreds of small bats start a blitzkreig attack on the bugs. Darting in and out of my light beam, swallowing up a buffet, the bats cleared out every last bug alive. I was left with a completely unblocked sky, viewing stars and planets (and a few fat bats). Just me and Mr. Buckley, wailing away at the desert silence.
Seems like this song will never end!
"She's a tear that hangs inside my soul forever..." Damn! Overproduced, in my opinion--I like the solo live version better. Still, damn!
Started out sounding like the Polka version of "Us and Them".
Bit confused by the low rating of this song. For me it's up there with some of best rock songs which you can listen to again and again - harmony and melody way more interesting than most, and catchy to boot, good vocal solos (if a bit too Bobby Planet orientated), excellent musicianship, superb arrangement. (I can see RP repsonses in my head to the industry patter). I also hear bit of magic in there as well. Always been one of my favourites. Grace is a masterpiece, and I believe Jeff would have been much more of a driving force of rock sons than Rufus has been (although I appreciate what Rufus is doing).

Easy, now. There are certain voices that people seem to either love or hate. For instance, Thom Yorke's voice drives a significant minority of RP posters, including me, absolutely nuts, but Radiohead is one of the highest rated bands here. My comment here was going to be "Great voice, but too overwrought for me." Have to agree, though --- at a 7+ rating, I'm probably gonna have to learn to live with it --- just like Radiohead.
Too much crying. Females are better at artistic crying—wait ever hear Left Bank "Don't Walk Away Renee"? Now that's some pretty good crying!

I don't know. I'm pretty long in the tooth (not in a nursing home or anything) and I just don't care much for it. I don't find the vocals or guitar interesting. Maybe his big fans like the lyrics. Or maybe someone could educate me on JB. Not _bad_ though. I guess he's pretty passionate
Thank you Bill! I've been listening to RP for months now and this is the first time I've caught a song from Jeff. I really miss his music.

Much imitated artist, spawned a host of musical 'offspring'. Wonderful album, his Dad would have been proud.

Jeff Buckley is probably my all-time favorite artist. He came up during the height of grunge music and put out something beautiful and original. Truth is, I like his covers more than most of his originals. He covered everyone from Dylan to Edith Piaf (and of course the single greatest version of a Leonard Cohen song ever to be recorded). I've even heard him do some opera. His voice was one-of-a-kind and I could never get enough of it.

Yep. This song, and whole album, are full of lines like that: they reach into your heart and give it squeeze. I don't know if that's good or bad, I guess it depends where you're standing. I'm constantly surprised at the venom J.B. generates here. His music is raw emotion. Maybe that's the problem. Peace, c.

try listening to his father Tim sometime........Jeff was really great but I liked his father even more......they looked and sounded very similiar and both died young...almost the same age I think.....
I agree... also the line 'She's a tear that hangs inside my soul forever...' Always makes me think of someone I fell in love with, but ultimately it did not work out. Jeff was an amazing artist and I was so sad to discover him after his death. Moreso to find he did several shows in here in Chicago I never got to see. He's not an artist for everyone, but definitely my favorite artist/songwriter of recent years. (Recent being the last 20 years or so) tony99 wrote:

Jeff Buckley may well have been an amazing artist; I can't argue with you, as I'm not familiar with anything he's done except this piece. This piece, however, I don't find appealing.
